A song from Selena Gomez’ critically-acclaimed Spanish language thriller Emilia Pérez has been slammed online as ‘offensive’ for it’s simplistic explanation of gender-affirming surgery.

Called La Vaginoplastia, the song sees Zoe Saldana’s character Rita Mora Castro speak to doctor’s about surgery for her client Juan ‘Manitas’ Del Monte.

Manitas is a cartel kingpin who hires Saldana’s character to help her disappear and covertly transition into a woman.

The song, which is sung in English, sees Rita approach doctors and ask ‘I’d like to know about sex change operation,’.

The doctor then replies ‘man to woman or woman to man?’.

When Saldana’s character tells him from ‘man to woman,’ the doctor replies: ‘From penis to vagina’.

A chorus of nonsensical lyrics then follows, including doctors chanting ‘from penis to vagina’ accompanied by patients dancing as they lie on hospital beds.

After Emilia Perez became the big winner at Sunday’s Golden Globes, scooping four prizes after receiving the most nominations, people have been quick to slam the song as a ‘tasteless’ and ‘ridiculously simplistic’.

‘As a trans woman, this song is my thirteenth reason why,’ one comment wrote below the video of the song on YouTube.

‘They gave this a golden globe rather than Wicked,’ wrote another.

‘This is possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen,’ said another.

Critics have been quick to take to social media to slam the song in particular.

‘THIS IS NOT A REAL MOVIE F DSHJDSFHDSFHHJDSF,’ one person wrote.

‘**THIS** IS THE EMILIA PEREZ I HAVE HEARD SO MUCH ABOUT??,’ said another.

‘It’s basically a telenovela opera. It has extreme comedy and tragedy. It is definitely an experience!!,’ said another.

‘The entire movie is not this funny. it’s a slog, really racist and transphobic. but we famously have different tastes so maybe you’ll get something out of it,’  wrote one.

‘Interesting choice to cast bad singers and use bad music. The bad lyrics really bring it together,’ said a third.

‘Hey wait a minute… they stole those lyrics from Cats,’ joked one.

‘Once in a while a french dude will make a movie about queer people that people at Cannes will call ‘a life-changing work’ or whatever and then it’s released to general audiences and we all find out it’s some South Park s***,’ joked another.
