‘Bloodstained Men’ take anti-circumcision message to Abilene’s streets

Motorists at the intersection of busy southwest Abilene streets honked and waved to a group of men — and a few women — they saw in clothes that appeared to have deep, red blood stains on their crotches.

The openly graphic display is a deliberate call to action, said “Brother K,” founder of the Bloodstained Men movement that calls for the end of male circumcision.

Traveling through Abilene as part of a 20-day tour throughout the Southwest, the group’s core issue, said spokesman David Atkinson, is that “children in American hospitals are being strapped down and having their penises probed and clamped and sliced into and partially amputated.”

“These are perfectly healthy children, and there is no reason to amputate any body part from a perfectly healthy child,” he said. “Amputation is should only be used as a last resort when there is some condition that requires treatment.”

The group, which started and will end its travels in Las Vegas, was in San Angelo on Sunday, Midland the day before, and was traveling next to Wichita Falls.

Opposing views

A 2012 American Academy of Pediatrics policy stated there were a number of potential health benefits from circumcision, including prevention of urinary tract infections, penile cancer and transmission of some sexually transmitted infections

But the act of circumcision, Atkinson and other protesters argue, causes a loss of sensation in the part of the penis that is amputated and negatively alters the mechanics of intercourse.

“They’re not fully functional,” Atkinson, said, issues others throughout the world don’t have because the practice is shunned.

“It’s just very destructive for natural sexual function,” he said.

Atkinson said the European medical community has “condemned American doctors for tampering with the genitals of perfectly healthy children.”

(The) foreskin is a normal, healthy, valuable part of the human penis,” he said.

Eliminating violence

Prioritizing the issue, Atkinson said, is important because “this is where sex and violence first meet in a in a human’s life.”

“We know that early childhood trauma has negative effects throughout life,” he said. “And so, we are optimistic that if we can reduce the sexual violence against children, there will be less violence in the future.”

The group is also against female circumcision, he said.

“Nobody should cut the genitals of any child,” he said. “We are opposed to the genital mutilation of all children, regardless of the ethnic or religious or cultural background of their parents.”

Women protest, too

Tori Caswell, one of a small group of women joining the protest, said she traveled from Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Currently studying to be a midwife, she became passionate about the issue when she was working in the field of lactation.

“I saw baby boys after they were circumcised and was tasked with helping them to breastfeed,” she said. “They had a lot of difficulty. So I started research more about it and became convinced it was really traumatic. And so, I had to take action.”

Caswell describes herself as a “feminist men’s right’s activist.”

“When you define feminism as equality for the sexes, you may find yourself tasked with taking up a cause for men,” she said. “I worked in breastfeeding and found we were having conversation around women’s rights as it relates to abortion or birth trauma. But we weren’t having that conversation about consent around circumcision.”… More
