Fifty-six per cent of Americans believe President Joe Biden’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine.

Nearly an idential percentage of Americans fear Putin could use nuclear weapons as the conflict escalates.

A I&I/TIPP Poll released Monday found that Americans are ‘deeply unsettled’ by Putin’s moves against Ukraine.

A majority of American adults believe Russian President Vladimir Putin was emboldened to invade Ukraine after the U.S.’s disorderly exit from Afghanistan – but Republicans and conservatives agreed in larger numbers

On that question, there wasn’t a major divide between Republican and Democratic, and liberal and conservative responses, with 59 per cent of Democrats in agreement, compared to 53 per cent of Republicans. And 59 per cent of conservatives versus 57 per cent of liberals.

The group that said it was most likely that Putin would use nukes was Democrats, followed by conservatives.

Fifty per cent of conservatives agreed strongly, representing the largest group to hold this view.

Still, 21 per cent of Democrats said they agreed strongly, with another 25 per cent of Democrats saying they somewhat agreed.

A number of Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have publicly made the connection between the botched Afghanistan withdrawal and Putin’s decision to invade.

Overall, 77 per cent of Americans believe the U.S. military will be dragged into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with 34 per cent believing that strongly and another 43 per cent saying they somewhat agreed.

Conservatives and Republicans were more likely to believe that the U.S. military might become involved.
