Americans rush to learn Mandarin on Duolingo as TikTok ban looms and RedNote rises

Popular language-learning app Duolingo reportedly saw a 216% spike in American learners of Mandarin Chinese amid the imminent ban of TikTok and mass migration to RedNote, another Chinese app

Amid the fast-approaching TikTok ban date, Americans are flocking to Duolingo to learn Mandarin Chinese as more and more people download the Chinese social app RedNote.

The language-learning app reported a 216% spike in Mandarin learners compared to the same time last year, with the ban imminent — it’s scheduled for Jan. 19, unless it’s halted by the Supreme Court or if an American somehow finds a way to purchase the app.

If neither of those things happen, the incredibly popular social media app will be taken off U.S. app stores and will eventually fail to function on users’ devices unless they install a VPN client.

RedNote users are also allegedly learning English

So, to avoid the ban, many are turning to RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, which is essentially the Chinese side of TikTok — which itself is owned by the same company.

Over 700 million users have reportedly flocked to the other app, which has prompted a cultural exchange between Americans (and citizens of other countries who abandoned the app) and the Chinese.

RedNote functions similarly to TikTok, but it’s algorithm is Chinese, meaning much of the content that comes across user profiles is in Mandarin. And, with an influx of more Americans, many of the Chinese using the app are attempting to learn English.

Many Americans decided to take crash courses in Mandarin using Duolingo, the famous language-learning app featuring a passive aggressive green owl, prompting the company to joke about the 216% influx on X: “Oh so NOW you’re learning mandarin,” the company wrote.

In another post to TikTok, the company promoted its ability to teach Americans and others Mandarin, with the short clip featuirng the owl at the airport heading to China. It’s overlaid with the text, “me because I’d rather move to China & learn Mandarin on Duolingo.”

That video now has over half a million likes. Another recent clip teaches “TikTok refugees” some useful Mandarin phrases. That one has even more likes.

According to Appfigures, which provides app intelligence data, consumer demand for Duolingo’s language courses has also led to an influx in app downloads across the U.S. — a 36% spike, to be exact, on the App Store and Google Play since Jan. 3, which might be a sign that users tried other Chinese apps before RedNote hit markets later in the month.

Duolingo is now ranked 22nd on the list of Top Apps, which doesn’t include games, and 20th overall, a nearly 20-position spike over recent weeks.

Some TikTok refugees struggled with tech issues when they signed up for RedNote, TechCrunch reported. Others got booted for community violations fairly quickly. But the sharp influx of users to the app signals an intent to move from one Chinese-owned app to another as opposed to migrating to somewhat similar American competitors like Facebook and Instagram Reels and other Meta products.

In a survey to new users asking how they found RedNote, a large number reportedly selected “TikTok” as their response. The migration from one Chinese app to another signals a lack of care for the possibility of the collection and potential misuse of personal data from them, which is what led to the ban of TikTok in the U.S. in the first place.

Congress faced intense backlash from America’s more-than-170 million TikTok users over the ban, but it nevertheless went into effect, passing both chambers before it was signed into law by President Joe Biden. The Supreme Court will have the final say on the legislation.
