Finding a washroom to pee is a big problem in Shanghai

Recently, a thread about a woman who took off her trousers and peed under the broadday light under the watchful eyes of the public in front of stores at Xujiahui (徐家汇), Shanghai aroused heated discussions.

The incident was dubbed as “Pants-down Gate / Pants-off Gate (脱裤门)”. In the thread, the netizen, who started this thread, posted 6 photos, telling the story of a woman caught peeing on a road of Xujiahui. From the photos, we can see there is a luggage near the woman too.

Some netizens think that the woman might just arrive at this place, and could not find the public toilet, when she really wanted to take a piss and was unable to hold it. Some others expressed they were shocked to this news.

On May 18, our reporter interviewed several security guards around this place, but all of them said they did not know about this matter, except for a traffic warden who told the reporter he heard of the news but did not know the details.

Then, our reporter interviewed some passers by too for the questions like “Whether is it hard to find toilets in the streets of Shanghai?”, and “Do you happen to have had trouble finding the toilet when you really wanted to take a piss?” Four of six interviewees said the toilets in the streets have become more in the recent years, and the signs have become more obvious too.

“It is comparatively easy to find.” But the other two said it is indeed hard to find. An older woman told the reporter that when she happened to want to take a piss and could not findthe toilet, she tried to find a hospital or a restaurant nearby to ask for the help to use their toilet.

In addition, citizens all expressed that to poo or pee in the public places should not happen. The quality of people needs to be improved. In the meantime, governments should add more public toilets and signs too to these public services.
