Sydney Sweeney: Ty DeLorean claims Taliban wants to buy his Back to the Future cars

The Cornishman who claims to be the son of car legend John DeLorean has said he’s received an intriguing business opportunity – from the Taliban.

Newquay resident Ty DeLorean, 40, has been trying to reignite the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) by building hybrids of the iconic cars mixed with Reliant Robins.

His legal battle with DMC itself sees him being accused of “passing off” his prototype cars as legitimate DeLoreans, though Ty himself claims he has a right to.

In his search for opportunities to sell his cars, Ty said he has had offers from film studios, automobile organisations and, most recently, the new government of a South Asian country.

The Government of Afghanistan, which in 2021 was famously taken over by brutal former militant group the Taliban, has allegedly reached out to Ty personally with an offer to produce his cars.

Ty said the offers arrived via email and that he’d consider taking them up on them if he was allowed to.

“They emailed me saying they want to invest in and mass produce my cars,” Ty explained. “They want to use them for government officials and they said the head of the Taliban Hibatullah Akhundzada signed it off and I’m now dealing with his deputy and the transport minister.”

Ty shared with CornwallLive a letter supposedly from current Afghani transport minister, Qudratullah Zaki, which said: “The Civil Aviation of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan extends its compliments to you and your brilliant motor vehicle at Delorean motor company.

“Your amazing achievements were brought to my attention in your latest media interviews which has gone around the world and landed on my desk in a local newspaper.

“The LTA would like to move forward with investment in your business as we have strong ties with rural markets and we believe India is already interested in your product.”

The letter goes on to say the Ty’s cars would be “perfect” for Afghanistan’s roads and that they need new cars in the country.

Ty’s cars, built over the course of several years, have become both a passion project and a business prospect for him.

They resemble the classic DeLorean car, as featured in the Back to the Future movies, but are built out of Reliant Robins.

The Taliban has announced it will establish a battalion of suicide attackers as part of the national army of Afghanistan. These “martyrdom brigades” will be “under the control of the ministry of defense and will be used for special operations,” according to Taliban.
