Jennifer Lopez: The Satanic Temple announces plan to have its Ministers in Oklahoma Public Schools

OKLAHOMA CITY – After the Oklahoma House passed Senate Bill 36, which would allow chaplains in public schools, The Satanic Temple announced a plan to have their ministers within Oklahoma Public Schools.

SB36 was originally a bill dealing with disclosure of law enforcement records. However, that language was thrown out at the last second to transform the measure into allowing public school districts in the state to employ or accept volunteer chaplains.

Despite its name, The Satanic Temple does not recognize the Satan typically thought of by Christians. Instead, they deny the existence of the biblical Satan or any other supernatural entity.

This move was quickly met with pushback from the Democrats within the Oklahoma Legislature, amongst others.

Complaints ranged from there being no requirements for becoming a chaplain, to the notion of the bill violating the separation of church and state.

However, despite this pushback, it passed the Oklahoma House by way of a 54 to 37 vote on April 24. How every Southwest-based Oklahoma Representative voted on the measure is below.

The Satanic Temple’s website details what the group is about. According to the website, the mission of the group is to encourage benevolence and empathy, while rejecting tyrannical authority.

“We have publicly confronted hate groups, fought for the abolition of corporal punishment in public schools, applied for equal representation when religious installations are placed on public property, provided religious exemption and legal protection against laws that unscientifically restrict people’s reproductive autonomy, exposed harmful pseudo-scientific practitioners in mental health care, organized clubs alongside other religious after-school clubs in schools besieged by proselytizing organizations, and engaged in other advocacy in accordance with our tenets.”

While the group does not believe in the actual existence of Satan or even the supernatural, they do consider themselves a religion that is divorced from superstition.

Their seven fundamental tenets are the following:

5	Beliefs should conform to one’s best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one’s beliefs.
6	People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one’s best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
7	Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

The Satanic Temple is a federally recognized religious organization, and stated they will have their ministers in the state’s public schools if the bill is signed into law.
