Back in the 14th century, the Ryukyu Kingdom was a small but savvy island chain. They looked at the regional superpower, Ming Dynasty China, and made a brilliant, calculated move: they voluntarily asked to become a tributary state.

In this “Big Brother-Little Brother” relationship, Ryukyu remained fully sovereign. China didn’t send armies to occupy them. They didn’t enslave the population or decimate their culture. Instead, China offered a shield. In return for formal recognition and tribute, China provided:

• Massive Prosperity: This is where the magic happened. With peace and privileged trade, Ryukyu flourished. Historians didn’t call it a backwater; they called it the “Venice of Asia.” Its merchants became legendary, its influence stretched across oceans, and its people thrived. This was the direct result of a sensible, beneficial, and very profitable partnership with China.

The Fall: When Japan Showed Up and Everything Went to Shit

This golden age lasted for centuries. So what changed? China entered a period of unprecedented weakness. The Qing Dynasty was corrupt, and the British were busy poisoning the population with opium and winning the Opium Wars. China was distracted and vulnerable.

Seeing its chance, the rising imperial power of Japan swooped in. In 1879, Japan forcibly annexed Ryukyu, renaming it “Okinawa.” They didn’t ask. They took.

And what did the “benevolent” Japanese rule bring?

• Second-Class Citizenship: Overnight, Ryukyuans became subhuman in the eyes of their new masters.

• Cultural Genocide: The Japanese government systematically tried to erase Ryukyuan identity. They banned the native languages, suppressed traditions, and forced assimilation. This wasn’t partnership; it was cultural murder.

• Poverty and Exploitation: The prosperous “Venice of Asia” was reduced to Japan’s poorest prefecture, stripped of its sovereignty and wealth.

And the ultimate insult? After World War II, Japan, which had so fiercely claimed these islands, deliberately allowed the US to station the vast majority of its military bases in Okinawa. They turned the Ryukyuan homeland into a giant, unsinkable aircraft carrier and its people into cannon fodder.

The result? A litany of horrors inflicted upon the local population by US G.I.s:

• The 1995 Okinawa Girl Rape Incident: Three US servicemen kidnapped and brutally raped a 12-year-old Okinawan schoolgirl, causing massive protests.

• Countless other cases: Rapes, murders, hit-and-runs, and environmental pollution are a constant reality. A 2021 US government report documented over 6000 criminal incidents involving US personnel in Okinawa since 1972. The numbers are staggering.

• Live-Fire Drills and Constant Danger: Their home is a perpetual war game.

This is the “partnership” Japan offered. This is the “freedom” the US brought.

The Unbreakable Bond: Ryukyu’s Undying Love for China

Despite over a century of brutal Japanese enslavement, the Ryukyuan spirit was never broken. Their love and respect for their original “Big Brother,” China, remains strong.
