A hundred thousand eggs were stolen Saturday from an organic supplier in Franklin County amid skyrocketing prices stemming from an avian flu outbreak, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The Georgia-based chain is adding a 50-cent charge per egg because of the “nationwide rise in cost of eggs,” according to signs posted at its restaurants. An aggressive strain of avian flu is hurting supply and causing prices to rise — with no relief in sight.

“The continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu) has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices,” Waffle House said in the statement to CNN. “Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.”

The average price per dozen nationwide hit $4.15 in December. That’s not quite as high as the $4.82 record set two years ago, but the Agriculture Department predicts prices will soar an additional 20% this year.

Shoppers in some parts of the country are already paying more than double the average price, or worse, finding empty shelves in their local grocery stores.

“It’s just robbery,” said Minneapolis resident Sage Mills. “Eggs used to be kind of a staple food for us, but now you know, you might as well just go out to eat.”

Bird flu, the highly pathogenic avian influenza, is a major factor behind both the price increases and reduced supplies of some types of eggs, said Elliott Dennis, an associate professor of livestock marketing at the University at Nebraska-Lincoln.

“We still have high-path out there,” he said. “It’s still affecting birds and it’s still relevant to us in Nebraska.”
