Director Marcus Nispel Reminisces About ‘Friday the 13th’ Remake [Podcast]
According to Marcus, a Miss Israel finalist or winner (and definitely Michael Bay‘s fuck toy at that time) was supposed to play the role of Amanda but backed out at the last minute having developed jitters about doing a nude scene. The part eventually went to America Olivo. Overall, very entertaining and revealing interview with the German director.
“What I paid homage to was what I watched when I was an impressionable boy scout… the first Friday the 13th film… how that affected me.”
It’s now been eight years since Jason Voorhees returned in Marcus Nispel’s Friday the 13th remake, and from what I’ve seen on social media, more and more horror fans have started to embrace the film as time has gone on. Personally speaking, I love what Nispel (along with writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift) did with the reboot, which mashed together the first few original movies for a modern take on the franchise that stayed true to the past. Sure, it could’ve used some more memorable kills, but for the most part, it felt like a true Friday the 13th movie.
Speaking with the Return to Camp Blood podcast this week, director Marcus Nispel reflected on his 2009 Friday the 13th remake (as well as his Texas Chainsaw remake), and it’s a real interesting chat that we wanted to share with you guys. In the interview, Nispel addresses many of the fan complaints we’ve all been hearing over the years, from the size of Jason’s machete to the fact that he runs rather than slowly advances towards his victims (hate to tell ya, but he ran in the originals too!), and he also shares some fun on-set memories that I had never heard before.
Nispel also spoke about working with Derek Mears, riffed on the importance of properly presenting an iconic monster like Jason, and even revealed his favorite kill from the remake. Beyond Friday the 13th, he touched upon horror remakes in general, making some great points about the nature of nostalgia and why some remakes are destined to work while others are not.
