A rumor circulated online in early December 2024 claiming that a screenshot (archived) showed a post from the official Burger King account on X, reading, “We don’t snitch.” Users discussed this image on Dec. 9, 2024, hours after news broke of a suspect’s arrest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The image displayed 2,400 “retweets,” 511 “quote tweets” and 18,700 likes.

As authorities arrested and charged a 26-year-old man in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, a screenshot of a purported X post by tech billionaire Elon Musk went viral.

The post criticized people who were defending the suspect as a “folk hero” for supposedly targeting Thompson and empathized with insurance companies that “have a duty to shareholders to maximize profits.” Per the screenshot, Musk supposedly posted:

On Dec. 9, 2024, after police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, took 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione into custody as a suspect in the Dec. 4 shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, a rumor spread on social media that he was caught after trying to use a fake ID to purchase food at a McDonald’s restaurant.

For example, the @DailyLoud account on X posted (archived), in part, “BREAKING: Person of interest in UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s fatal shooting caught trying to use a fake ID at McDonald’s.”

We located no evidence to substantiate the rumor that Mangione had attempted to use a fake ID at McDonald’s so far.
