Neri’s Confirmation and the Story Behind the Photo

29-year-old Larisa Neri confirmed that the photo indeed shows her: the shot was taken in 2017 by photographer Mateus Ferrero. The woman said that a few days ago her social networks “blew up”: people started tagging her on Instagram and sending messages. At first she thought someone had mistaken her for someone else or was pranking, but later she had to search the Internet to understand the scale of the event.

“I was scared. I can’t say whether it’s dangerous for me, or if talking about it could hurt someone there. I don’t know who is right or who is to blame, because I don’t know who is involved in this.”

Neri added that she had to remove the salon’s name from her profile description, as the events were already affecting her work. “Leaders spoke with me; some people take all this as a joke, but it really harms my professional activity,” she explains.

In the context of the photographer Mateus Ferrero’s story, the author himself said that the events surrounding the photo came as a shock to him. Ferrero recalled that in 2017 he was just starting his career and invited his friend Neri to a photo session, after which he posted the shot on the Unsplash platform. According to the photographer, in the week before Gandhi’s public appearance, people in India were curious who the woman in his photo was, but he thought he was dealing with scammers. As a result, the photo gained millions of views.

“People were calling me on Instagram and Facebook. It was awful. I deactivated my Instagram to try to understand what was happening.”

Ferrero also said that he limited access to his images on Unsplash and on Facebook, because some users use them for purposes other than intended. He admitted he felt fear when he imagined that such a story could happen to other people he photographed.

“When you see people going to your Twitter, Facebook, personal Instagram, you panic. The first reaction is to shut everything down and figure it out later. Some people found it funny, as if this were some TV series, but I felt as if my life had been invaded.”

Today Ferrero continues to limit public access to his photos on certain platforms and stresses caution with using photos that could later become tools for manipulation in the public space.
