U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has seized more egg products from United States borders this year than it has seized pounds of fentanyl.

Statistics from the CBP website show that so far in 2025, the agency has seized 5,938 egg products and 1,631 pounds of fentanyl coming into the US.

Newsweek could not make an exact one-to-one comparison as CBP measures eggs by number of products and fentanyl by weight.

Why It Matters

One of the reasons President Donald Trump gave for placing tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods was to stop what he sees as the flow of fentanyl coming into the U.S. from the northern and southern borders.

The president swore to lower egg prices “on Day 1” of his presidency. In early March, the cost of a dozen eggs reached an all-time high of $8.17. A critical reason egg prices are so high is bird flu sweeping through chicken populations, which has led farmers to cull their flocks to prevent the disease from spreading.

A CBP spokesperson told Newsweek on Monday: “Nationally we can report that there has been a 36% increase in eggs being detained at ports of entry this fiscal year (October 2024 to February 2025) when compared to the same time last fiscal year (October 2023 – February 2024).”

CBP seizes egg products from overseas due to concerns around avian influenza (bird flu) and Virulent Newcastle disease (ND).

In a February press release, CBP officers in Texas said that: “Travelers need to be aware that raw egg imports from Mexico are prohibited. Since January area CBP officers have encountered more than 90 people attempting to import raw eggs from Mexico.”

The Trump administration has struggled to rehire the bird flu experts at the Department of Agriculture who were swept up in mass firings across the federal government.

Bird flu has a mortality rate of around 50 percent in humans, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, just 2 milligrams of Fentanyl is considered a potentially fatal dose depending on a person’s body size, tolerance and past usage.

Fentanyl has been used as an argument to deport migrants from the U.S. despite evidence showing that 86.3 percent of convicted fentanyl traffickers are U.S. citizens.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson told Newsweek: “Travelers are prohibited to bring in fresh eggs, raw chicken, unprocessed avian products and/or live birds into the United States. Travelers are encouraged to declare all agriculture products to CBP officers and Agriculture Specialists, failure to declare may lead to potential fines and penalties.”

They added: “Most of the eggs being confiscated by CBP agriculture specialists are from travelers who declared the product and then abandoned them without consequence. There have been very few cases of people purposefully evading the inspection process/failing to declare the product. When that happens a $300 civil penalty is applied, and the eggs are seized. The vast majority of egg intercepts are from travelers who declare them when asked.”

Egg prices have started to drop this month from their record high in early March, but Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has warned that they may rise again over Easter.
