‘Viagra honey’: the illegal aphrodisiac France can’t get enough of
The craze among young males for ‘all-natural’ products containing the active ingredients of erectile dysfunction drugs worries police officers and doctors alike
A honey laced with erectile dysfunction drugs and sold online and in corner shops as an all-natural aphrodisiac is being seized in record quantities in France.
“Aphrodisiac honey” usage is surging despite potentially serious health risks, customs officials in France warn
Traffic in brands of so-called “love honey” has almost doubled over the past year and several tonnes have been seized in Marseilles and other ports in shipments worth millions of euros, mainly from Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and other countries, the national customs service said.
Despite bans and government warnings, young men are joining a craze for consuming sticks or packets of honey with “all-natural ingredients” that contain sildenafil or tadalafil, the active elements in Viagra and Cialis, the prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction.
Consumers are ignoring warnings that have been issued since 2021 by the national anti-fraud and pharmaceutical agencies on the dangers posed by supposedly natural honey products with the two drugs. In vulnerable people they can cause heart disease and other serious conditions, the authorities say.
“Following a trend, a younger public are going for this in a big way, thinking they can match the performances to be found on porn sites,” a police officer told Le Figaro newspaper.

Health professionals in the United States sounded the alarm late last year over the “sexually enhancing” honey craze among men on university campuses. Viral TikTok videos propelled the fashion despite warnings from the Food and Drug Administration. The authorities in Spain and the Netherlands have also issued love honey warnings.
Though illegal in France, the honey products, sold under brand names such as Black Horse, Jaguar Power and Etumax, are available online with home delivery. They are also sold in French cities by all-night convenience stores, the customs service said.
Augustin X, a business school student in Rezé, in the Loire-Atlantique département, was fined €15,000 last June for setting up an online order service that earned him €50,000 in a few months. Called the Aphrodisiac Beehive, it sold Royal Honey and Black Honey brands from Malaysia. He told the court that he had no idea that the honey did not just contain natural ingredients.
Hospital emergency units have reported a rise in male patients suffering from the effects of the illicit erection-enhancing drugs.
A 36-year-old man underwent an emergency operation after arriving with penile necrosis at a hospital in Lyons in 2022, Le Parisien newspaper reported. Juliette Bloch, head of alerts at the National Health Safety Agency, said: “There is no reliable dosage in these products. You can sometimes find the equivalent of several medications in a few millilitres or grams of a product.”
An unnamed doctor told Le Parisien: “It’s simple. Something that makes you hard instantly does not just contain plants.”
