McKayla Maroney: Taliban orders Afghan shopkeepers to behead mannequins

Clothing retailers in Afghanistan’s western Herat province have started hacking off the heads of mannequins in accordance with a Taliban directive.

In a video shared Monday on Twitter by Natiq Malikzada, a man saws off a head of a mannequin as someone chants “Allah Akbar,” which means “God is Great” in Arabic.
A pile of dummy heads can be seen on the floor as someone is heard laughing.
According to The Times , the shopkeepers in Herat were told last week to behead their mannequins after the Taliban had ruled that the inanimate models were “idols,” which are forbidden by Islam.
The worshipping of idols is considered an unforgivable sin under the religion, The Times reports.
Initially, the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Herat had ordered the shops to remove the mannequins completely, but a compromise was reached after complaints from shopkeepers, the Daily Mail said.
Exasperated retailers in Herat who spoke to Afghan media Raha Press , said the mannequins cost between US$100 to $200 each.
“Actually, these mannequins are my only belongings now, and now with this new order I have to cut their heads off,” shopkeeper Ali Ahmad said. “It is a great loss for me.”
The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, which is responsible for administering the Taliban’s interpretation of Islam, was reinstated in September after the fall of Kabul.
