Albania appoints AI bot as minister to tackle corruption

Albania has made headlines by appointing an AI bot as a government minister tasked with tackling corruption, a first-of-its-kind move announced this week in Tirana.
Albania has appointed Diella, an AI-powered virtual minister, to fully manage public procurement, a government branch notorious for corruption.
By replacing human decision-making with AI, Diella ensures transparent, unbiased tender processes, aiming to eliminate bribery and… pic.twitter.com/ZoEwnC12iP

Overview
Skepticism over AI’s neutrality and oversight
A lot of people are skeptical about the move, raising concerns about who controls the AI and how it might actually be used. There’s a strong undercurrent of suspicion that the AI could just become a new tool for the same old problems, especially if there’s no transparency about its training or oversight.
This seems like it’ll open up the door to a lot more corruption.
Who “trained” it, and on what?
The article itself also notes that the government has provided no details on human oversight.
Seems like it’ll be an easy way for grifters to absolve themselves of responsibility with “the AI said it was ok”.
Whoever programs, sets up and oversees the AI will be ruling through it. The concept of an unbiased AI overlord is so naive.
A new tactic to conceal corruption will be to present A.I as a “non-biased” decider of things.
The same A.I trained to be sycophantic, trained on certain sub-sets of data, etc.
Potential benefits of an AI minister
Some users see potential in the idea, arguing that an AI could be less susceptible to bribery or personal bias than a human minister. They point out that, in theory, an impartial system could help clean up government processes—if implemented correctly.
I think its not a totally bad idea. You cant bribe an AI, an AI cant get honeypotted by the Kremlin, etc….its the same reason I would like AI to call balls and strikes in baseball instead of a flawed, biased human. Yes its unsettling, yes its creepy and yes AI can make cold unfeeling decisions but every day we see the results of biased, self serving individuals in government so maybe its time our public officials had a referee that cant be compromised.
IMO a.i. would be really helpful to fight corruption because it would interpret things in black and white, and wouldnt let people slide because they are friends / being bribed. However, i doubt that a.i. is good enough to understand corruption right now. I think a.i could be really good reviewing bank statements / transfers but i kinda doubt that the politicians would allow that
Keep in mind how low the baseline is for human politician performance. My bet: it will be the best performing minister of its cohort. My congressional delegation next please
Cynicism and humor dominate the conversation
The announcement has also sparked a wave of humor and cynicism, with many joking about the inevitability of the AI itself becoming corrupt or being involved in bizarre scandals. The general vibe is a mix of disbelief and dark comedy.
It’s fine. Nothing will go wrong.
Lol it’s Albania, even its AI will end up being corrupt
Six months later: Albanian anti-corruption AI minister caught running coke-fueled OnlyFans production house to fund massive underground datacenter expansion.
Albania’s AI minister experiment is already fueling heated debate and plenty of memes. Whether this bold move will actually curb corruption or just add new twists remains to be seen.
That said,
Margot Robbie titties a bit to wish Albania all the best in their quest to rule the world as an AI Superpower…
