This was the deadliest mainland hurricane since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with mass destruction across Florida, the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee.

They’re offering them $750. They’ve been destroyed. These people have been destroyed.”

Researchers have been studying the link between hurricanes and global warming. Higher temperatures across the planet due to an increase in the concentrations of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere has been deemed as a possible cause for stronger winds and hurricanes, Vox reported.

“The more greenhouse gas, the more potential there is for stronger winds and hurricanes,” Kerry Emanuel, an emeritus professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told Vox. “For every degree centigrade that you raise the ocean temperature, the wind speed in the hurricane goes up between 5 and 7 percent.”

Hurricanes are also moving slower which “means the storms that make landfall spend more time parked over a given region, forcing the area to endure more wind and rainfall.”

The average and maximum rainfall rates from hurricanes have significantly increased due to rising water and air temperatures. According to the World Weather Attribution research group, the precipitation from the storm during Hurricane Helene was 10 percent heavier due to climate change. Such extreme rain has become 40 to 70 percent more likely because of global warming.
