Jennifer Aniston: Titanic’s sister ship, Britannic, wreck site at depth of only 390 feet (119m)

Fun fact- Violet Jessop was a nurse who survived the sinking of both the Titanic and the Britannic. She also worked on the Olympic before it was withdrawn from service in 1935.

The Britannic was indeed the sister ship of the Titanic and the third and largest ship of the White Star Line’s Olympic class of ocean liners. While the Titanic famously sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in 1912, the Britannic met a similar fate but under different circumstances.

During World War I, the Britannic was requisitioned by the British government as a hospital ship. On November 21, 1916, while en route to the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea, the ship struck a mine laid by a German submarine near the Greek island of Kea. The explosion caused the ship to sink rapidly, but fortunately, due to improvements made after the Titanic disaster, the loss of life was significantly minimized. Out of the approximately 1,100 people on board, 30 individuals lost their lives.

The wreck of the Britannic was discovered by explorer Jacques Cousteau in 1975. It lies at a depth of around 390 feet (119 meters), making it more accessible for divers compared to the Titanic, which rests at a depth of about 12,500 feet (3,800 meters). Despite its shallower location, diving to the Britannic wreck still requires technical diving expertise due to the depth and challenging conditions.

The wreck of the Britannic serves as an underwater attraction for divers and a site of historical interest, offering a glimpse into the legacy of the Olympic-class ocean liners and the events of World War I.
