J.K. Rowling has once again proven that her feud with the stars of her own franchise has spiraled into something deeply unhinged. This time, the Harry Potter author unleashed a near-editorial-length tirade against Emma Watson, after the actress had spoken about Rowling with surprising compassion during her recent interview with Jay Shetty.

Rowling, who has made transphobia her full-time project since 2018, took to X to call Watson “ignorant of how ignorant she is,” accusing her of being sheltered by wealth and fame.

She raged about how the 35-year-old star has “never experienced adult life uncushioned by wealth and fame,” before diving back into the anti-trans rhetoric that alienated much of her once-loyal fanbase.

What began as a dig quickly unraveled into a rambling rant where Rowling once again trotted out her recycled talking points about prisons, changing rooms, and hospital wards—none of which had anything to do with Watson’s actual comments.

The timing is particularly jarring given Watson’s words. On Shetty’s podcast, the actress acknowledged her disagreements with Rowling’s views but stressed she did not hate her:

“I really don’t believe that by holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said. “It’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.”

Rather than accept this olive branch, Rowling doubled down, claiming Watson’s grace was nothing more than a performative move because “full-throated condemnation” of her is no longer trendy.

In her lengthy social media response to Watson’s interview, Rowling also shared a clip from Free Speech Nation. In it, author Fiona McAnena suggested that Watson had been careful “not to go too far” in her comments, but argued she “can’t sit on the fence.” Host Josh Howie followed up by criticizing Watson’s 2022 BAFTA appearance, where she declared she was there “for all the witches” before seemingly mouthing the words “but one.”

At the time, much of the internet interpreted the moment as a jab at Rowling. The author addressed that speculation in her post, adding her own recollection of what she claims happened behind the scenes.

“The television presenter in the attached clip highlights Emma’s ‘all witches’ speech, and in truth, that was a turning point for me, but it had a postscript that hurt far more than the speech itself,” Rowling wrote. She went on to claim that Watson passed her a handwritten note that read, “I’m so sorry for what you’re going through”—despite, as Rowling pointed out, having her phone number.

The message, Rowling said, came at a time when she was facing an intense wave of death, rape, and torture threats, which led to heightened personal security and constant fear for her family’s safety. “Emma had just publicly poured more petrol on the flames,” Rowling wrote, “yet thought a one-line expression of concern from her would reassure me of her fundamental sympathy and kindness.”

The irony, of course, is glaring: Rowling publicly laments threats to her own safety while showing little regard for the safety of trans women, who face daily violence and discrimination fueled by rhetoric like hers. To make matters worse, she has even openly celebrated when the UK government rolled back trans rights, a stance that reveals just how little she cares about the lives and safety of other women.

Watson, meanwhile, has spent her post-Potter years advocating for gender equality, women’s rights, and ending workplace harassment. She has served as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, launched the HeForShe campaign, and spoken out in defense of trans people multiple times. Her activism has only reinforced how out of touch Rowling has become as she continues to frame herself as the real victim.

Rowling’s obsessive fixation on her former cast members, particularly Watson and Daniel Radcliffe, makes her increasingly look like a bitter, isolated figure railing against the very people who brought her fictional world to life. What could have been a moment to accept Watson’s kindness instead turned into yet another reminder that Rowling has entirely lost the plot.
