Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun investigated in ongoing corruption scandal

27th November 2024 – (Beijing) According to reports from British media, Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun is under investigation as part of a broader anti-corruption probe within the People’s Liberation Army. Current and former U.S. officials have disclosed that Dong is facing internal scrutiny, making him the third consecutive Defence Minister to become embroiled in a corruption scandal.

Dong succeeded Li Shangfu in December 2023, following Li’s removal after just seven months in office due to corruption allegations. Prior to Li, former Defence Minister Wei Fenghe was also investigated for similar issues, highlighting a troubling trend within China’s military leadership.

While specific details regarding the allegations against Dong remain unclear, the ongoing investigations reflect the Chinese government’s intensified crackdown on corruption within its armed forces. This move aligns with President Xi Jinping’s recent directives to eliminate graft and enhance military preparedness.

Li Shangfu had abused his authority to enrich himself by taking bribes in exchange for granting favors in violation of military and party discipline. Li’s predecessor, Wei Fenghe, was also accused on similar charges.

Wei Fenghe was found to have accepted a “huge amount of money and valuables in return, constituting the suspected crime of taking bribes,” Xinhua said, adding that he had “lost his faith and loyalty and contaminated the political environment of the military, ”bringing enormous damage to the Party’s cause, the development of national defense and the armed forces, as well as the image of senior officials.”

Both prosecuted under the justice system run by the People’s Liberation Army, the military wing of the Communist Party.
