- 49-year-old woman, identified only as Zhou and accused of procuring girls, is charged with same offence
Wang Zhenhua, 57, a billionaire Chinese real estate developer, has been officially charged with the sexual molestation of a 9-year-old girl, in a case that has shocked the nation and prompted soul-searching.
Wang, the former chairman of Seazen Holdings, a listed company, was formally charged by prosecutors in Shanghai on Wednesday.
A 49-year-old woman surnamed Zhou was also arrested under the same charge.
Zhou allegedly brought the 9-year-old girl and a 12-year-old girl from the eastern province of Jiangsu to Shanghai, according to Xinmin Evening News.
She checked the two children into a luxury hotel, it reported.
The case has sparked an intense debate about child sexual abuse in China.
Many wondered whether child sexual abuse was actually much more widespread than it has been reported.
They also shared on social media educational posts for parents to teach their children about possible abuse.
A question titled “Does the extreme lack of proper sex education leads to a large number of child abuse cases in China?” has collected more than 600,000 views on Zhihu, a Quora-like forum.
Many experts believe a more open attitude toward sex education, especially among children, will help minors to better understand themselves and report sexual abuses.
Days after Wang’s detention last week, the People’s Daily newspaper vowed a thorough investigation into the case.
“The authorities need to investigate whether the case is molestation or rape, whether there is a morbid ‘supply chain’ behind the case, and whether Wang had previously committed similar crimes,” read a post on the paper’s account on Twitter-like Weibo.
According to Girls’ Protection, a Beijing-based child rights advocacy group, reports of child sexual abuse cases are on the rise in China.
From 2013 to 2018, Chinese media reported 2,096 cases of child sexual abuse. They suspect the actual number of cases was much higher.
In 2018, about 80% of the reported victims were under the age of 14, more than half of the cases involved acquaintances and more than 35% of the cases took place in schools, Girl’s Protection reported.
Wang Qiushi, a lawyer at the Binli Law Firm, told the South China Morning Post that it’s important to ask why Wang was charged with sexual molestation rather than rape, as the sentences for the two crimes were significantly different.
Under Chinese law, the crime of rape carries a sentence of between three and 10 years in prison, while sexual molestation of children has a maximum penalty of five years in jail.
