Sydney woman charged with fraud over alleged crime syndicate claiming to be psychics

A woman is the third person charged with fraud following her alleged involvement in a crime syndicate claiming to be psychics.
Police allege the syndicate has defrauded at least four victims out of large amounts of money and property.
People have been urged to not provide anyone claiming to offer psychic services any money.

A woman from Sydney’s west has become the third person to be charged with fraud following her alleged involvement in a crime syndicate claiming to be psychics.

Tina Montana, 47, was arrested following the execution of a search warrant at a residence on Punchbowl Road, Punchbowl on Wednesday morning.

She was taken to Campsie Police Station where she was formally charged with 13 offences including identity theft, money laundering, participating in an organised crime group, fraud and hindering the discovery of evidence.

She was denied bail to appear before Bankstown Local Court on Wednesday.

It is alleged that the syndicate had been operating in the Sydney area as far back as 2006 and had defrauded at least four victims out of large amounts of money and property.

Strike Force Recycling was established in July this year to investigate the alleged frauds committed by multiple people.

A 48-year-old women and a 49-year-old man, who police allege were known to the woman arrested today, were charged in August with multiple fraud-related offences and remain before the courts.

Tarot cards and crystal balls seized

Detective Inspector Craig Brooks said police would allege the group were claiming to be psychics and during the process with the victims, were encouraging them to supply them with property and money.

“We will be alleging that these offenders have taken property from their victims and not returned it, in breach of what the victim would have expected,” he said.

With the matters now before the courts, Inspector Brooks could not specify the exact nature of the “psychic” services provided, but did confirm several items relating to the profession were seized from the residence searched at Punchbowl, including tarot cards and crystal balls.

Scamwatch statistics show 105 physic and/or clairvoyant scams have been reported in Australia this year alone with 25 of those in NSW.

On the danger of these scams, Inspector Brooks strongly urges people to not provide anyone claiming to offer psychic services any money.

Police believe there may be further individuals involved in the syndicate and urge anyone with information, or anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to the scam, to contact Crime Stoppers.
