A urologist says the man’s penis, which had already started to rot, could have fallen off, had the rubber bands been left on for too long
An elderly man in Chicago, the United States (US) had to undergo emergency surgery after the tip of his penis started to rot. According to the Daily Mail, the unidentified 81-year-old man suffers from dementia and had wrapped rubber bands around his manhood for about three days.
The shocking case is cited in the medical journal Urology Case Reports..
The man had apparently gone to the hospital for ailments related to his diabetes. However his wife, who was with him, told the doctors attending to her husband, how he had wrapped his scrotum in rubber bands and refused to remove them.

Man’s penis could have fallen off

Dr Fardod O’Kelly, a urological surgeon at Beacon Hospital in Dublin, told the publication that the man’s genitals could have fallen off had the rubber bands not been removed soon enough.
“Strangulation cases like this are thankfully rare. The veins and lymphatics become very easily compressed due to an increase in local pressure. This leads to severe pain and swelling,” O’Kelly said.

“An organ like the penis could probably tolerate this for a couple of hours (if you don’t pass out with the pain), however eventually the pressure becomes too great and the arteries become compressed as well. This is important as the arterial compression means no blood flow in, and that means no oxygen supply, so the organ begins to die.”

When attending to the man, doctors had to burn the out the dead flesh with a hot wire and excised it with scalpels – this was to prevent further degradation. They also inserted a catheter into his urethra to drain the reservoir of urine that had pooled because the patient’s groin garrote had prevented him from peeing.

According to the medical report, the patient managed to recover within a period of five days.
