Springfield man claims Crocs caused him to drive into gas station

A man from Springfield is facing a felony charge after causing significant damage to a Kum & Go on S. Campbell Ave. in Springfield earlier this year.

According to court documents, Dale William Hamit, born 1964, is charged with a class E felony of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage exceeding $1,000.

The probable cause statement said on Feb. 27, 2025, Hamit was observed on security footage driving his white 2012 Dodge Ram into the front of the Kum & Go building on S. Campbell Ave., causing two large front windows to break. He immediately left the scene without providing his information to anybody.

Hamit returned to the store two times later that day without claiming to be the driver and “even looked at the security footage of the original incident,” the probable cause statement said.

A Springfield Police Department officer arrived on scene the second time Hamit was visiting the gas station and asked Hamit if he was involved in the crash. Hamit denied being the driver, but the officer reviewed surveillance footage and confirmed it was the same truck, as well as identifying Hamit exiting the vehicle on the surveillance footage, according to the statement.

Hamit later admitted to the officer that he was responsible for the incident and said he was “driving in his Crocs and they got caught in the pedal, causing him to accelerate into the building,” the statement said.

The statement added that Hamit told the officer he “freaked out” and fled the scene. The estimated amount of damages to the building were around $3,700. He’s due in court in May.
