Hot Dog Eatery Offers Free Drinks With Proof of Vasectomy: ‘Snip for Shake’
A Nashville eatery is offering a creative deal to support male birth control: free milkshakes for customers who show proof of a vasectomy.
“We thought this would be a fun and unique way to get the word out about vasectomies for men,” Sean “Big Daddy” Porter said to Newsweek. Porter owns Daddy’s Dog’s, a hot dog restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee.
“It’s a way to put the ball in the guy’s court, and will hopefully also help break the stigma that comes along with men’s health,” he said.’
After the fall of Roe v. Wade, abortion is expected to be outlawed in about half of U.S. states. Tennessee is one of 13 states with a “trigger law” banning all or most abortions after the Supreme Court ruling. A six-week abortion ban in the state took effect on June 28, outlawing the procedure before many people even know they are pregnant.
Tennessee ranks 41st in the country for women and children’s health, dogged by high rates of maternal and infant mortality, according to America’s Health Rankings. Much of the state is rural, with limited access to prenatal care—47 of 95 counties lack an OBGYN. It also has the nation’s highest rate of rural hospital closures, leading to longer travel times and riskier births.
Google Trends showed a spike in searches for “vasectomy” after Roe v. Wade was overturned. In Nashville, urologist Joseph Pazona told local station WTVF-TV that he was flooded with inquiries about the procedure and expected his usual number of 50-60 vasectomies per month to double as a result of Tennessee’s abortion ban.
The owner of Daddy’s Dogs announced his special deal for customers with vasectomies in a video posted to social media.
“The world’s a pretty crazy place right now, but I have a way to make it just a little bit better,” Porter said in the clip.
“It’s our Snip for Shake deal. We’re giving away one free milkshake with proof of vasectomy. Just bring a note from your doctor saying you got the snip and we’ll give you any milkshake you want.”
He added, “There’s nothing like an ice-cold milkshake after a vasectomy.”
Porter had his own vasectomy years ago after deciding not to have children. He told Newsweek that other than “a few trolls,” the restaurant has received overwhelmingly positive reactions to the promotion.
“We’ve probably had 25 or so redemptions at this point,” he said. “With a few folks coming by straight from their doctors.”
