There is gratuitous nudity but no erotic satisfaction. Cloud Atlas star Zhu Zhu is mesmerising as the stowaway, Li, especially as she is cleverly filmed frequently naked.

China’s Zhu Zhu (Cloud Atlas), Hong Kong-born and London-raised Tom Wu (Skyfall), Aussie Remy Hii (Treading Water) and Washington, D.C. native Rick Yune (Olympus Has Fallen). Creator John Fusco and Harvey Weinstein are executive producing the Weinstein Co. drama, which received a 10-episode straight-to-series order in January. Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are directing the first two episodes. The series is set in China during the 1200s — a world replete with astonishing martial arts, sexual intrigue, political skullduggery and spectacular battles. SECRET SHARER is a drama about a young Polish sea captain who takes command of a Chinese cargo ship and finds himself hiding a mysterious woman who is accused of being a murderer. It is rated 12A for infrequent strong language and moderate violence.
There are three uses of strong language (‘f**k’), and milder language including ‘shit’, ‘hell’ and ‘balls’.
Moderate violence occurs during a scene in which two men wrestle with each other and throw punches. A stabbing takes place. This is all without strong detail and there is only brief sight of some blood on clothing in the aftermath of the fight.
There are also images of female nudity, but this is not particularly sexualised.
No-one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a 12 rated video or DVD.

Feisty though she is, it’s safe to say Li is not a feminist creation. We see her naked breasts before her face. There are slow motion montages of her undressing (upskirt included) and she spends the bulk of the film without trousers on. There is gratuitous nudity but no erotic satisfaction.

Zhu with a part that’s as bare as her body for much of the film and its lucky they’re stuck in close quarters with each other as they have little to talk about otherwise.

Secret Sharer review – stormy-seas drama remains rather flat

Fudakowski reserves his greatest enthusiasm for exoticising, male-gazey images of Zhu in the altogether, or wearing one of the captain’s crisp white shirts just so off the shoulder.

After the nocturnal appearance from the surf of the naked stowaway Li (played by Zhu Zhu; she is filmed very coyly to ensure that 12A certificate).

Zhu Zhu’s sexy stowaway fails to keep this Joseph Conrad adaptation afloat

His version retains Conrad’s protagonist, a callow young sea captain (Jack Laskey) struggling to assert his authority over a mutinous crew, but he switches the gender of the naked swimmer whom the hero hides in his cabin, making the fugitive stowaway a gorgeous young woman (played by Chinese TV host Zhu Zhu).

Konrad keeping Li hidden from his (returning) crew while attempting to contain the growing attraction he feels towards her – although it’s hardly surprising that he falls for her charms as she wanders around his living quarters dressed in just a white shirt, flashing a peachy bum cheek in his general direction.
He and Zhu (a former MTV China host) make a photogenic couple, however their courtship is unusually formal, more furtive glances than steamy seduction.

Secret Sharer (2014)

By supplanting a woman (instead of a man) as the strange floater who mysteriously boards the ship, Fudowski is hoping to inject some romance into his romantic thriller casting Zhu Zhu for her looks alone. While this may provide a shot of titillation for some viewers (as her bum cheeks protrude cheekily from under her shirt) it’s certainly not a relationship ”Shot through with suspense and intense eroticism”. There is no chemistry between the leads who morph in a sterile brother/sister relationship early on (the boyish Captain may fantasise about her in his feverishly wet dreams but he doesn’t possess the “balls” to carry this through), spending the night sharing a bun,k but very much as friends rather than lovers. As a character Li has little to offer this turgid drama (apart from her pert bum) and although she is billed as being the link between the crew and Captain, there’s little evidence that they respect her enough to take her seriously either.
