Mongolia’s Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene has stepped down after losing a key parliamentary confidence vote triggered by public outrage over his son’s luxury lifestyle, throwing the resource-rich nation into political uncertainty.
Oyun-Erdene, a Harvard-educated reformist who took office in 2021, received only 44 of the 64 votes required to maintain power in a late-night parliamentary session early Tuesday. The vote followed a week of protests and internal party divisions, sparked by revelations of his son’s extravagant spending.

The Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), which has led a coalition government since last year’s elections, is now expected to attempt to form a new administration in the coming days. The political shake-up threatens to stall progress on critical reforms and foreign investment plans aimed at transforming Mongolia’s economy.
The resignation is a significant setback for Oyun-Erdene, who had made attracting Western investment in Mongolia’s vast mineral wealth a cornerstone of his administration. With deposits of copper, uranium, and other critical minerals, Mongolia has become a strategic player for global powers seeking alternatives to Chinese and Russian supply chains.
During his tenure, Oyun-Erdene aimed to cut poverty in the country of 3.5 million by half by 2030 and grow GDP from $15 billion in 2022 to $50 billion within the decade. He had also promoted major economic initiatives, including a $1.6 billion uranium mining deal with France’s Orano Group and the expansion of the Oyu Tolgoi copper-gold mine with Rio Tinto.
Speaking ahead of the vote, Oyun-Erdene defended his economic record, citing rising export revenues, strong GDP growth, and improved debt management. However, he acknowledged shortcomings in addressing domestic political and social issues. “I paid insufficient attention to social and internal political matters,” he admitted, referencing previous protests over coal sector corruption in 2022.

Investor confidence in Mongolia had been buoyed by his policies, with Fitch upgrading the country’s credit rating to B+ last September and forecasting 6% annual GDP growth through 2026. However, concerns remain about high inflation and declining export revenues.
Bayanjargal Byambasaikhan, vice-chair of the Business Council of Mongolia, noted that while many capital projects are in motion, the next administration will face significant hurdles. “Coalition politics are never easy,” he said. “Mongolia is a striving democracy — political change is something investors should expect.”
As of Tuesday morning, the Prime Minister’s office has not issued an official statement on the resignation. The country now faces a critical period of political maneuvering that could shape its economic future and regional role for years to come.
