During his meeting with the president, Musk was spotted sporting a mysterious black eye. Neither Musk nor Trump mentioned it during the highly anticipated meeting in the White House.

Finally, at one point toward the end of the briefing, one reporter found the courage to ask the former Trump official, “Is your eye ok?”

“Scott Bessent called him out and said, ‘You promised us a trillion dollars (in cuts), and now you’re at like $100 billion, and nobody can find anything, what are you doing,'” Steve Bannon told The Daily Mail. “And that’s when Elon got physical. It’s a sore subject with him.”

“Trump 100% sided with Bessent after the clash,” Bannon added. “I don’t think Bessent has any bad blood, but he’s got a job to do and he’s going to do it.”

Despite the Tesla CEO officially leaving the White House, the billionaire announced that he would be heading an austerity team, which has been tasked with getting “rid of fraud and waste” in the federal budget. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk posted.

He added that the DOGE mission “will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.” On Thursday, a senior administration official told CNN that while Musk will be leaving his official role, he will continue to serve as an “unofficial advisor” and could attend some future White House meetings.

During Trump’s first four months as president, Musk has been instrumental in slashing thousands of federal jobs, which resulted in intense blowback on both him and the Trump administration. Additionally, Musk’s various business ventures, including Tesla, which saw sales and stocks plummet while vandalism at his stores surged.

It is unclear who, if anyone, will replace Musk, though reports suggest that Russ Vought, the Office of Management and Budget director who helped build Project 2025, is being considered for the role. Shortly after Musk’s departure was announced, the internet had a field day harassing the former official.

Several social media users took the opportunity to poke fun at the tech-mogul who they claim wasn’t very “efficient” in his role at all, one user even saying that he was “like the guy in the group project who does absolutely nothing and then says, ‘we crushed it.'” A second person questioned, “How much fraud was officially detected and who is getting prosecuted pls.”

Another user shared a meme, hilariously insinuating that Musk did nothing before making his grand exit. “Elon Musk bought the presidency, used DOGE to kill investigations into his businesses, gave himself billions in government contracts, cut foreign aid, stole data, found no waste, cut several holes in the social safety net and f***** off,” a third person commented.

Some users insisted that Musk was ousted by the Trump administration as a result of the Tesla attacks that were taking place in early spring. “The only reason he disappeared is that he is one of the most unlikable and polarizing figures in America. MAGA is afraid of him sinking the midterms,” a fourth person added. “Voters need to be reminded of him and his actions with regularity.”
