Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s family rips plan to honor Musk, Murdoch with RBG award

Relatives of Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday denounced honorees of a philanthropic award named after the late Supreme Court justice.

The big picture: The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation announced this week it plans to give its “Ruth Bader Ginsburg Leadership Award” to conservative billionaires Elon MuskandRupert Murdoch, among others.

What they’re saying: Without singling out any individual honoree, Ginsburg’s family called the foundation’s plan “an affront to the memory of our mother and grandmother, ” in a statement shared with the Washington Post.

The foundation “has strayed far from the original mission of the award and from what Justice Ginsburg stood for,” the statement said.

State of play: The Dwight D. Opperman Foundation is headed by the widow of the namesake, Julie Opperman, a big Republican donor, per Mother Jones.

Other awardees this year include lifestyle media mogul Martha Stewart, convicted felon and junk-bond billionaire Mike Milken and actor Sylvester Stallone.
Brendan V. Sullivan, Jr., chair of the RBG Award, said when the honorees were announced that they “reflect the integrity and achievement that defined Justice Ginsburg’s career and legend.”
The foundation did not immediately respond Friday to request for comment.
