Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has dismissed more than 100 intelligence officers across 15 agencies for engaging in sexually explicit discussions on a government-operated chat platform, according to a New York Times report.
The chat program, managed by the National Security Agency (NSA), was intended for secure discussions on sensitive intelligence matters. However, a group of employees misused the platform to engage in conversations involving sexual content, including explicit discussions about gender transition surgery, intelligence officials said this week.
The existence of the chats was first revealed Monday by conservative activist Christopher Rufo in City Journal.

Speaking on Fox News on Tuesday, Gabbard confirmed she had issued a directive to terminate the employees involved and revoke their security clearances. She called the misconduct an “egregious violation of trust” and a breach of “basic rules and standards” of workplace professionalism.
A spokesperson for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) later stated on X that Gabbard had issued a memo directing all intelligence agencies to identify employees who had participated in “sexually explicit chat rooms” on the NSA’s platform by Friday.

Gabbard framed the decision as part of a broader effort to restore integrity within the intelligence community under the Trump administration.
“Today’s action, in holding these individuals accountable, is just the beginning of what we are seeing across the Trump administration,” she said. “Officials have moved to clean house, root out that rot and corruption, and weaponization and politicization, so we can start to rebuild that trust in these institutions.”
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported that Gabbard and the CIA have also taken steps to fire an undisclosed number of employees who worked on diversity programs under the Biden administration. However, a federal judge has temporarily halted those dismissals while reviewing the case, with a ruling expected Thursday.

Unlike the explicit chat scandal, the officers involved in diversity recruitment efforts have not been accused of any misconduct. They have since filed lawsuits against the government, arguing they should be reassigned rather than terminated.
Gabbard suggested that her recent actions had encouraged whistleblowers within the intelligence community to come forward with further concerns.
“People are stepping forward because they are all on board with the mission to clean house and refocus on our core mission of serving the American people,” she said.
