The report shows the Gaines Township teen admitted to selling the nude photos and videos to people she met through the Kik app. Court records indicate the teen charged customers between $20 and $100 via PayPal before sending each video or image from her Gmail account.
The yearlong operation came to an end when her mother found out and called police.
“We don’t come across it very often,” Kent County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. E.J. Johnson said Wednesday. “Anytime we come across it, we try to jump on it as soon as we can before pictures start circulating at school.”
The Kent County Sheriff’s Department has investigated more than a half-dozen cases this year in which sexual predators have badgered kids to send sexually explicit photos. In one instance, someone posing as pop star Justin Bieber asked a 9-year-old girl to send him nude photos.
A Cannon Township woman called police after someone set up a Kik account under her son’s name, then asked multiple 8th and 9th grade girls from Rockford Public Schools to send photos of various body parts.
The case involving the Gaines Township girl came to light when the girl’s mother told police she learned that her daughter had been producing nude photographs of herself and selling them to strangers on the Internet.
She told detectives she’d been doing it for about a year, court records show. The girl told police she had four to five customers in the previous month as well as repeat customers.
Using the social platform Kik, she posted that she was “selling stuff,” court records show.
“Men would then contact her and ask what she was selling,” Kent County Sheriff’s Det. Matthew Batchelder wrote in a search warrant affidavit to retrieve on-line account information of those who purchased images and videos.
“She would then tell them that she would send them nude pictures and videos for a price,” Batchelder wrote. The men knew she was underage, but the teen could not elaborate on how they knew.
There was no set price for the images, but she received more money for videos than for photos. Prices typically ranged between $20 and $100, court records show.
Images and videos were sent to customers via her Google Gmail account and she was paid through PayPal. She did not send images until after receiving payment, court records show.
No arrests have been made and the investigation continues, Johnson said.
