A mayor in Japan is under fire after admitting to having checked into hotels over 10 times with a married male subordinate.

Maebashi Mayor Akira Ogawa held a closed-door meeting with all city council members on October 2nd to explain her repeated hotel meetings with a married senior city official, but afterward she avoided stating whether she would resign.

Scandal-Hit Maebashi Mayor Wants Time to Decide Her Fate

The mayor of Maebashi, the capital of Gunma Prefecture, said Thursday that she wants time to decide how to take responsibility for her “love hotel” visits with a married male city employee.

She admitted to visiting hotels with the employee, but insisted that there was no romantic relationship. Chosun Daily quoted her as saying that this was to “avoid scrutiny and discuss work comfortably”.

According to The Mainichi, she said she had visited hotels with the employee over 10 times since February 2025.

“I need time to consult with my lawyer and supporters,” Mayor Akira Ogawa told the press after attending a city assembly meeting where she gave explanations about the scandal. “I’ll accept all severe opinions against me and make a decision,” she added.

According to the mayor, the city employee has been transferred to a lower-ranking position at his request. “I’ll deal with his family sincerely,” she said.

During the two-hour assembly meeting, held behind closed doors, Ogawa, 42, reiterated that she had no sexual relationship with the city employee. She promised to consider explaining the situation directly to the people of Maebashi.

Regarding her use of an official car to meet with the city employee, the mayor said it was not inappropriate.

Addressing reports that the male official involved had been reassigned, Ogawa clarified that the personnel change was requested by the employee himself on September 22nd under the city’s voluntary demotion system, stressing it was not a disciplinary action.

City council chairman Tomitaka Tomita urged Ogawa to quickly make her intentions clear, saying, “I want her to indicate her course of action as soon as possible, even a single day earlier would be preferable.” The council is scheduled to hold a meeting of party representatives on October 3rd to discuss how to proceed. Gunma Governor Ichita Yamamoto, who had previously criticized the mayor by saying the “responsibility is heavy,” reiterated his concern when speaking to reporters in Maebashi on the evening of October 2nd.
