The app can be accessed via the Meta Quest headset, where it can be downloaded with no age checks or verification, the only requirement is a Facebook account

An undercover researcher has posed as a 13-year-old child, entering a virtual strip club in the Metaverse where people “get naked and do unspeakable things”.

As part of an episode of BBC Investigates, a reporter, using an app with a minimum age rating of 13, visited multiple virtual reality rooms where avatars were engaging in virtual sex.

The reporter said she was not only shown sex toys and condoms, but also approached by adult men.

The app in question, VR Chat, is an online platform where users explore virtual worlds using 3D avatars. To use the app, users must wear a virtual reality headset, of which Meta owns 75 per cent of the market share, and set up a profile, with no identity checks.

The researcher said once in VR Chat she was able to engage in mundane everyday activities like going to a VR McDonalds, however she was also able to enter a VR strip club, showing the darker side of the new technology.

Here she said she was told by one man that avatars could “get naked and do unspeakable things”.

While the app is not made by Facebook, it can be accessed via the Meta Quest headset. Here it can be downloaded with no age checks or verification, the only requirement is a Facebook account.

Initially branded the Oculus Quest headset, the device was used for gaming, going to virtual concerts and going to the cinema. Now it would seem the device is being used for much more nefarious purposes.

Meta has said that they do allow users to block other users and as the technology is still new it is constantly looking at making safety improvements “as it learns how people interact in these spaces”.

What was said?

Head of online child safety policy at the NSPCC, Andy Burrows, told the BBC that the findings of their investigation was “extraordinary”.

“It’s children being exposed to entirely inappropriate, really incredibly harmful experiences. This is a product that is dangerous by design, because of oversight and neglect. We are seeing products rolled out without any suggestion that safety has been considered,” he added.
