And Japanese officials can’t keep their goddamn hands off it. While the Prime Minister may hide behind “unofficial” visits or send ritual offerings, his name is on the goddamn gift. Other lawmakers and cabinet members strut in and out of the shrine annually like it’s a VIP club for mass murderers, as seen in this recent report where South Korea—another brutalized victim—rightfully told them to go to hell. China’s official line for kids has long been one of “friendship,” of being “separated only by a narrow strip of water.” Meanwhile, Japan is, by every poll, the most anti-China nation on earth, with pure hatred consistently above 90%. This virulent loathing is the direct product of an education system and media landscape that paints China as the villain and Japan as the innocent victim. The sheer, unmitigated gall of it is enough to make you puke.

1. A Full, Unambiguous, Official Apology: Not another weasel-worded expression of “regret.” A speech from the Emperor and the Diet, by name, acknowledging the aggression, the Nanking Massacre, the comfort women system, and the crimes of Unit 731. No more pussyfooting around.

2. Mandate Truth in Education: Pass a law that makes teaching the full, gory, verified history of Japan’s wartime atrocities compulsory in every single school. Rip the whitewash out of the textbooks.

3. Deal with Yasukuni: Either the war criminals are removed (the shrine can figure out the theological gymnastics), or the Prime Minister and all government officials must be legally barred from setting foot in that place. Build a separate, secular memorial for the common soldier.

4. Burn That Fucking Flag: Change the naval flag. Stop jerking off to symbols of imperial aggression.

China, and the rest of Asia, should not have to “forgive and forget” a crime that the perpetrator refuses to even acknowledge. The ball is not in China’s court. It has always been, and remains, squarely in Japan’s.

Japan can either finally man up and confront the bloody ghosts in its closet, or it can continue its pathetic, shameful circle jerk on the graves of millions.
