32-year old English rose Ruth Wilson nude debut (T&A) in The Affair [S1E1]
Ruth is arguably one of the most underrated English actress of her generation. It’s amazing (and sad) she never really bothered or serious about becoming part British invasion of American showbiz industry until the big 3-0 was around the corner. Maybe she was self-conscious about her looks. The likely reason for her resentment with success of fellow actors across the pond, loudly jumping on the anti-nudity (as a specific topic to harp on) bandwagon after her first foray into North America back in early 2010/11 didn’t produce the desired result. Ruth singling out Alice Eve was misguided at best and now, in making her own nude debut, seems quite hypocritical. British gals (the lookers) are calculative when it comes to their acting career. Once an actress reached a certain stagnation point (career and typecast-wise typically in accordance with age @ past sell-by date) yet still seeking a stable spot in the biz, urgency and desperation slowly becomes an irritating presence. Financial security drives the ambition, replacing youthful passion for the craft. Personal principles are put aside in facing the reality of the current situation.Β Ruth Wilson battled long and hard with herself before auditioning for the role of Allison. The nudity itself didn’t scare her. It’s the aftermath. Forever a fixture on the Internet, her dad and brothers reaction, nieces & nephews eventually bearing the brunt in shape of trolls in school…it terrified her. Ruth went in with low expectations, gave her best and walked out with head held high. It was still a surprise when she received a personal call from chief writer and show runner Sarah Treem. Ruth is Allison and Ruth going to be naked as a jaybird. Despite career high and mixed emotions, Ruth was extremely grateful to Sarah for believing in her. Extremely thankful she’ll be railed on-cam and boobs fondled by two cute guys.
As for the pilot episode, it’s a promising start. Not too showy. The family angle skimmed the clichΓ©d (the surly teen, sporting wife, the out of control kids, asshole father in law, etc) but reined in by snappy writing and West (aided by Maura Tierney) to keep everything grounded without going overboard to syrupy land. The overall understated approach allows the viewers to ponder over the proceedings as well as the initially ominous nature of the voice over narration. I’m giving the premiere season a shot, to see how things pan out. Fingers crossed for abundance of nudity by Ruth, some T&A from Maura and even sprinkling of toplessness by Julia Goldani Telles.
West was likeable as usual. The dude with strange amalgam of Brit-US accent that actually works in his favor which makes him very charming, believable even when he’s up to no good and being all gruff. You can always count on Tierney to class up any series/movie, making it more respectable just by being part of the cast. She’ll have her Emmy-moment when she discovers her husband of many years is banging a cute psychopath (or the real baddie is the conniving and full of resentment dear hubby?). Another overlooked actor like Ruth, tall and elegant with distinctive voice Joshua Jackson belongs on the big screen (his father-son segments in Fringe always gets to me) but sometimes a talented actor just don’t give a f*ck anymore and drops out of the ‘game’. Eager to see how far Joshua going to push his Cole character out of the comfort zone once he begins to suspect the love of his life Allison was two timing him.[ PW: FD030s00022 ]
