How Did Marilyn Monroe Make it in Hollywood?

In 1955, 20th Century Fox awarded Marilyn Monroe the richest per-film contract of any actress. “It means,” remarked Monroe, “I’ll never have to suck another Jewish cock again!” (McDougal, Dennis. The Last Mogul: Lew Wasserman, MCA, and the Hidden History of Hollywood. Crown Publishers, New York, 1998, p. 217). Now, I haven’t read Mr. McDougal’s book – I simply can’t bring myself to actually pay money for it – I pulled that quote off the Internet. However, I believe the full and accurate quote (whether or not in the book itself) is, “I’ll never have to suck another Jewish cock again!”

In 1949 a broke Marilyn Monroe posed nude for a calendar shoot. Hugh Hefner went on to buy those prints for $50, featuring them in the first issue of his magazine Playboy, published in December 1953. The image used as the centerfold is on the top left below: –

It was the assignment of an ambitious young photographer’s dreams: capturing Hollywood’s sexiest star for Look magazine in 1960. Lawrence Schiller’s chemistry with Marilyn Monroe seemed promising, and their professional relationship deepened when he photographed her on the set of her final, never-finished movie, Something’s Got to Give. The breathtaking nude shots from that shoot, some unpublished till now.

Photographer Bert Stern may best be known as the photographer who shot Marilyn Monroe’s famous last sitting, a collection of vulnerable and beautiful shots of the actress, taken at the Bel Air hotel in 1962. The photographs are arguably the most famous images ever captured of America’s most famous actress. Six weeks after she had posed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent barbiturate overdose.

As most anyone alive now already knows, New York Magazine’s Feb 2008 issue features Lindsay Lohan recreating the shoot now known as “Marilyn’s Last Sitting”, again shot by photographer Bert Stern.

Actress, model, and singer, Marilyn Monroe became a major sex symbol in a string of successful films during the 1950s and early 1960s, before her untimely passing at the age of thirty-six in August of 1962. Much has been written about the truly iconic “Norma Jeane Mortenson” but whether your fascination leans towards her fine comedic talents, her smoldering onscreen sexuality, her tempestuous public relationships, or her troubled upbringing as a foster child, Marilyn surely made one hell of an impact. Just a few of her notable movies include The Asphalt Jungle, All About Eve, Monkey Business, Clash by Night, Niagara, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, The Seven Year Itch, Bus Stop, Some Like it Hot, and The Misfits. She famously became the first pin-up for “Playboy” magazine when a calendar photograph (taken in 1949 while she was a struggling model) was recycled. As I promised last week, here is this “Classic Cutie” immortalized by photographer Bert Stern (originally for Vogue magazine). Published after her death, this image was part of session that became known as ‘The Last Sitting‘. They don’t really make them like Marilyn anymore, and topless or not, this fine picture is definitely art worth viewing (the entire series of shots is available online; check them out).
