Netanyahu labels investigations into cabinet scandals attempt at ‘coup’

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday criticized what it described as “political investigations” into series of recent scandals involving officials as an attempted coup d’état.

Netanyahu’s office was responding to the accusations of the former head of the Israeli internal intelligence service (Shin Bet), Yoram Cohen, who has claimed that the prime minister requested the surveillance of government ministers and defense officials involved in a “sensitive” defense project to make sure they weren’t leaking information.

“Contrary to Cohen’s words, the real threat to Israel’s democracy is not from elected officials but from elements in the enforcement authorities who refuse to accept the voters’ decision and are trying to carry out a coup d’état through unchecked political investigations that would be unacceptable in any democracy,” said the statement, which did not deny Cohen’s accusations.

Scandals and controversial bills are generating division in Israel due to the management of Netanyahu, who will also testify next week in a fortified underground room in Tel Aviv in his corruption trial that has been dragging on since 2020.

On Wednesday, Israel’s main military spokesman Daniel Hagari criticized a bill that would allow military and intelligence officers to leak classified documents to the prime minister and the defense minister without authorization.

“The Israeli army does not withhold information from the political echelon; but work together for Israel’s security,” Hagari said during a press conference, describing the bill, which passed its first vote (of three) in parliament Thursday, as serious threat to state security.

The legislation, dubbed the Feldstein Law, comes in the midst of a legal battle over the ‘BibiLeaks’ case, in which Eli Feldstein, a Netanyahu spokesman, and a reservist non-commissioned officer are accused of conspiring to leak a classified document to the foreign press to influence public opinion against a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

On Thursday, Israel’s Supreme Court ordered the suspects to be kept under arrest until Monday, when it will announce its final ruling regarding the prosecution’s appeal against the Tel Aviv court’s decision to keep Feldstein and the other detainee under house arrest.

In addition, Netanyahu’s chief of staff Tzachi Braverman has been accused of blackmailing a military officer with a compromising video taken from CCTV in the prime minister’s office in order to alter the minutes of wartime meetings in the moments before the Hamas attacks on Oct. 7, as well as calls held on the morning of the attack, according to Israeli media.
