It was deathly cold for me despite being given robes between takes as I had my period.
So the morning was pretty tough for me, just cramps, cramps and more cramps. Luckily the medics got me some super strong painkillers.

Q: What was the atmosphere like on the set? Did people enjoy shooting it? How much work went into your scenes? Did you shave your head or was it a bald wig? Did you enjoy it?

I have been bald for over a year now. So all the lush hairdos were actually well-done wigs! When I went for the live audition, Daniel Minahan (producer of Game of Thrones fame) personally wanted me to maintain my bald head for at least one scene!
The atmosphere on set was SUPER fun. People were friendly and getting make-up and costumes fitted was pretty exciting. I cosplay too but never as elaborate as this! I can proudly say I befriended some of the make-up team and a few costume team members, most likely because I am Malaysian and I can speak both English and Malay.
The love scenes were quite tiring to shoot, they switched off all air-conditioning to get “natural” ambient sounds! It was insanely warm and we got sweaty, which was appropriate, except the make-up team constantly had to powder our faces. Oh and the smoke machine made our nostrils black, so there were awkward times of sticking tissue up our noses. The heat got so high (also thanks to lighting equipment near the beds!) that I refused to wear a sarong or robe in between shooting! People were like “wow you’re so daring to skip the robe” and I’m all like, people have seen me naked before, it’s the first thing you find of me on Google Images, I think I’m okay.
Riding the cart was pretty cool, they were rough on the horses though but the guy’s a professional so I think he knows what he’s doing. I kinda cried a little but Tara (another actress) used to ride horseback and says it’s nothing.
The line-up scenes were the complete opposite, they had air-conditioning on and it was so cold!
The prayer scene was nice since we were fully clothed (most of the extras were different from episode 1), we had to memorize prayers which seems like they never made the final cut. My knees and feet were aching from all the kneeling!
The last scenes I did with the body painting was great. Being friends with the make-up team allowed for personal requests! I got to do some awesome acting too unfortunately it didn’t make the final cut! I won’t spoil it yet but next week or so I shall have some relevant behind-the-scenes photos uploaded on my Facebook fanpage so this makes sense!
Conclusion, did I enjoy it? Yes! If Marco Polo gets signed for a second season, I’d love to do it all over again, maybe even pick up a speaking role!

Q: How do you feel about how nudity and sexuality is portrayed on the show?

I am what some would call a modern feminist. I feel that nudity is the purest of one’s body. There’s a second group called “radfems” who hate naked women, I shit you not.
While yes, some might argue that I do adult entertainment (e.g /r/Godsgirls /r/CosplayDeviants ) and may be biased, I am also and artistic nude model. I do model for life drawing classes and we believe that the naked body is beautiful regardless of your shape, size and gender.
I enjoy the way that sexuality is portrayed on the show. I mean, just because the Asian culture is known to be conservative, doesn’t mean people don’t get freaky behind closed doors! I see no harm in showing the sexy side of Asian characters, sex is a natural thing. I read on Tumblr that some viewers felt that the show FETISHIZED Asian persons. Well, look at all the sex in Game of Thrones, no one’s complaining? Besides (POV from being a fetish model) ANYTHING and everything can and WILL be fetishized. Bald women can be a fetish. Asian women can be a fetish. Corsets can be a fetish. Shoes can be a fetish. HECK, I have SOLD videos of YAWNING and WIG fetishes!

My mum used to be paranoid about me posting a normal photo of myself back in the old days of Friendster! An aunt told her that “bad people” will superimpose my face on naked bodies!
These days she’s kinda proud I am relatively well-known as a Malaysian fetish/alt model, we even watched Marco Polo together.
My extended family is still on the fence about my nudity. My mum’s side is quite uncomfortable about it while my dad’s side doesn’t really know. My grandpa cut out and framed a picture of me when I showed up in Chinese newspaper once holding the new Malaysian 20 Ringgit note! I was still in journalism then.
Malaysia has morality police that can arrest hardcore porn producers/actors and sex workers. Magazines tend to censor (blur or pixelate) or Sharpie boobs and cleavage! The government is quite corrupted though. At some point I want to leave Malaysia because of that.

Q: When you got the role did they explain how this was a Netflix series, and how it airs all at once? How long did you actually film for your scenes, and have you watched the finished product yet?

I was informed of Netflix when I was scouted. Initially I thought the (casting) email was a scam because I could not believe I had the chance to shoot for the best channel ever!
I am a HUGE Orange is the New Black fangirl so yes, I knew about how they release all episodes at once. I still recall waiting and refreshing to get my fix of OINTB and then did a whole marathon while I sew corsets for my brand Katastrophy Korsets.
As for how long it takes to film, YIKES, I lost count of the hours. Maybe 4-6? Much longer than one would imagine. Extras do a lot of waiting. As well as munching on snacks and marshmallows and hoping not to drink too much water so you won’t need to make a 5 minyte toilet run which would be awkward during the love scenes… The hours are tiresome but they paid us well.
I am currently done watching the first 3 episodes! But I have already compiled my appearances to put on my portfolio.

I was actually scouted on Model Mayhem!
I exchanged around 20+ emails with casting director Jessica Lewis, talking about what the scenes involved and what were my personal limits as both an actress and model. Initially I was VERY picky on what I would and wouldn’t do! She sent me loads of picture references and slides too.
Back then I was a very mild softcore model despite being on /r/Godsgirls (porn site with a mix of soft and harcore images/videos) but after working on Marco Polo, I have become more open minded. While I still would not do hardcore content here in Malaysia as its both illegal and thus not regulated health-wise, I am willing to give hardcore work a shot in US and Europe. Nowadays my portfolio ranges from fashion, glamour, fetish, art nudes and artistic erotica.
As for the live auditions, we were told to prepare a “performance” so they can see how well we move. I was informed that nudity on set wasn’t necessary but I wanted to make it part of my act. As a HUGE fan of Dita Von Teese, I decided to do a neo-burlesque performance with Santigold’s Superman. I did the performance in front of a camera AND Daniel Minahan himself!
He said that we were twins due to my bald head haha. It was such a blessing working with Dan. Every time we met on set he greeted me like a close friend. I am very honoured to have met him.
I was actually offered the small speaking roles but sadly I was too nervous to accept them as I haven’t been acting since I was 19! I don’t entirely regret it now for spoiler reasons but I won’t mind trying out for a speaking role in the future as I have renewed my membership with my local theatre group.
Fun trivia: A full grown bush was actually a casting requirement! Q: What was the biggest surprise of filming nude/sex scenes (either on this show or just in general)? Fantastic work!

Silicone boobs are fun and squishy (we had 4 models with fake boobs in episode 1).
Lorenzo Richelmy’s chest is also very nice and fluffy.
Wigs/extensions tend to get caught in things (e.g other wigs/extensions, body parts) since we had a crazy amount of hairpieces and hair decorations. Q: Some of those sex scenes were a bit on the hardcore side, what was it like filming them?

Did you talk to/hang out with any of the big cast members?
I would also love to hear any story you might have to share, an anecdote perhaps.

Personally, as someone who frequently watches porn, I don’t find the scenes hardcore at all. I didn’t kiss a single girl!

It’s mostly about movement, positioning and expression. Oh and fake orgasm sounds.
I could say I befriended the head eunuch, played by Woon Young Park, a couple of the barons in the orgy (I think they didn’t make the final cut though!) as well as several of the girls.
Olivia Cheng was a blessing to work with! Daniel (the producer) always had me placed sitting close to her for several shots and episodes. She gave me great acting tips and was super friendly all the time!
Lorenzo (and his hairy chest, yum yum) actually fell on top of me during filming and dear god, I got a crazy crush on him. After that I kinda was enamoured over him (still am) and really wanted to see him on setc.l the time like a crazy fangirl! When I finally got to see him for the last time, he introduced himself to me (we were both out of makeup and dressed to go back to our hotels) like “Hi I’m Lorenzo! You are?” with his hand out. I was in my natural bald state so I went, “I’m the girl you fell on top of, I had a long hair wig and I said I wanted your autograph?”
He gave me a look and paused. Then he said, “OOOOOOOOHHHHHH! YOU!!!! You’re too hot! You’re too hot!” OH GOD. DAT ITALIAN ACCENT.
To this day I regret not bringing my cellphone on set at the time!
