AfD, in an unprecedented scandal in Germany – accused of spying for Russia

A huge storm has erupted in the Bundestag due to what the government claims are “targeted and systematic” questions from right-wing extremists about the details and weaknesses of the German army, the Bundeswehr. The German parliament will discuss serious espionage allegations, writes derspiegel.

It all started with Thuringia’s Interior Minister, Georg Maier (SPD), who warned about suspicious activities two weeks ago.

“For some time now, we have been observing with growing concern how the AfD is using the parliamentary right to ask questions to investigate our critical infrastructure in a targeted manner,” Maier said, expressing suspicion that Russia and President Vladimir Putin are the main beneficiaries. He added that it gives the impression that “the AfD is working out the Kremlin’s to-do list with its questions.”

The AfD angrily denied the allegations, and the head of the parliamentary group in Thuringia, Bjorn Hocke, accused Maier of “rising back to the Cold War” and fabricating espionage stories. Now, however, the coalition parties in the federal parliament are also demanding an explanation from the AfD. The head of the Unione parliamentary group (CDU/CSU), Jens Spahn, told AfD leader Alice Weidel on Monday that “the suspicion that a member of parliament is acting in parliament on behalf of hostile forces is the gravest possible.” He warned that if Weidel did not provide an explanation, she would “at the very least be complicit in a possible betrayal.” On the other hand, the parliamentary secretary of the AfD group, Bernd Baumann, dismissed the allegations as “absurd suspicions.”

The AfD in the Thuringian parliament has asked questions about details of military transport, drone protection and critical infrastructure, but a similar pattern has also been observed at the federal level. The chairman of the Bundestag’s defense committee, Thomas Rowekamp (CDU), told SPIEGEL that “it is very clear that the AfD parliamentary group is asking a series of systematically linked and very detailed questions about the capabilities and weaknesses of the Bundeswehr.” He believes that the scope and detail of these questions “cannot be explained simply by the legitimate interest in parliamentary oversight of the government.”

According to him, the reasonable suspicion is “that sensitive military information from the Federal Ministry of Defense and the Bundeswehr was systematically targeted and collected here, which would be of great value to foreign powers, not only to Russia, which for years has been continuously strengthening its espionage activities and hybrid attacks against Germany.”

According to SPIEGEL, senior military officials and the leadership of the Ministry of Defense have also expressed concern. The office of Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) is said to be coming to similar conclusions to those of Thuringia – that the questions are coordinated to uncover weaknesses in the army. “There is a system behind this,” says a source from the ministry, adding that it gives the impression that “Moscow’s question sets” related to military capabilities and the deadlines for the purchase of equipment are being “targetedly processed.”

The AfD in the Bundestag has shown interest in drone protection, critical infrastructure and the government’s ability to protect it. An example is question no. 21/2409, where AfD MPs want to learn everything about cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the field of the Interior Ministry through 27 questions. The questions are very specific: “How many data centers does the BMI currently have?” or “Which of these data centers have a functional backup supply that can cover long-term crisis situations (several hours or days)?”.

The party has also sent similar questions to the ministries of digitalization, transport, finance and, of course, defense. Detailed answers to these questions, it is said, would be more useful to Vladimir Putin, whose hackers have been trying to steal Germany’s political and economic secrets for years.

Perhaps AfD is spying for Sri Lanka?

The AfD parliamentary group leader, Baumann, rejected the accusations. He claims that the questions could “reveal the government’s mistakes,” especially about “the state of the entire infrastructure and the Bundeswehr,” which he says have been “destroyed by the savings of the CDU and SPD.” He adds that the questions and answers are public, and the government is not obliged to answer those that are secret.

“In this sense, Mr. Röwekamp’s suspicion of spying for foreign services is absolutely ridiculous,” Baumann said.

Although there is still no hard evidence that the AfD is acting on Russia’s orders, a case that SPIEGEL uncovered in December 2023 shows that at least once a parliamentary question was backed by a foreign intelligence service. An agent of the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) boasted that in 2021 he had initiated a question on Hong Kong through the AfD in order to “push the German government.” The AfD MP, Stefan Keuter, who submitted the question, denied any cooperation with the Chinese service.

According to security sources, Manuel Ochsenreiter, a former associate of AfD MP Markus Frohnmaier, is said to have played an active role in this operation, having received several thousand euros from China for this. Ochsenreiter can no longer be questioned – he died in 2021 in Moscow.
