Former President Donald Trump has spent years bragging to his associates that he has dirt on French President Emmanuel Macron, according to a Rolling Stone report published on Monday.

Rolling Stone spoke to two anonymous sources with knowledge of the matter, who told the publication that Trump had been gossiping about Macron’s love life — both during his time in the White House and after. According to the sources, Trump said he received the purportedly scandalous information about Macron through “intelligence” that he was given.

One of Rolling Stone’s sources told the outlet that Trump did not elaborate much on what he knew about Macron, and said that this made it “hard to tell” if Trump was “bullshitting.”

It is unclear if Trump ever possessed compromising information on Macron. However, a file labeled “info re: President of France” was among the documents found by the FBI during its raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence earlier this month.

Jennifer Palmieri, a former aide to Hillary Clinton, speculated last week that this file could be “kompromat,” a term for damaging information that can be used for blackmail.

Trump and Macron had a strained relationship during the former’s presidency.

While Trump claimed in 2017 that he had a “great relationship” with Macron, this swiftly devolved after Macron threatened to exclude Trump from a G7 joint declaration of unity in 2018.

Macron tried to repair ties in 2019 and said he would send Trump a new “friendship tree” to be planted at the White House, although this did not appear to help matters much.

In December 2019, Trump berated Macron for making “very, very nasty” statements on the sidelines of a NATO summit. Former Trump aide Stephanie Grisham also wrote in her book that Trump privately called Macron “a wuss guy” and commented that the French leader was “all of hundred twenty pounds of fury.”
