Lizzy Caplan currently stars opposite Michael Sheen in Showtime’s critically-acclaimed drama series about the lives of the sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, MASTERS OF SEX. Among many accolades Caplan has received for her performance, she was nominated for an Emmy Award and a Critics Choice Award for Outstanding Lead Actress.
William Masters and Virginia Johnson are known as pioneers of the science of human sexuality. Their research shoots them to fame on a trajectory that takes them from humble beginnings in the Midwest to the cover of Time magazine. Masters is a brilliant scientist who is out of touch with his own feelings. Johnson is a divorced mother who is ahead of her time on many fronts, including her determination to have a meaningful career. The pair’s relationship isn’t just professional, as it evolves into a three-way “marriage” with Masters’ wife, Libby. “Masters of Sex” is based on Thomas Maier’s book of the same name, which profiled the pair.

The actress recalled on Wednesday’s “Conan” that during the filming of the scene, “I’m noticing that I’m very nervous and my hands are kind of shaking. And then I grab his hands, and I notice that his hands are shaking… so that’s kind of making me feel better.”
Caplan’s comfort, however, was short-lived.
She hilariously revealed that as soon as they finishing shooting, Sheen walked to a garbage can and promptly threw up.

Actress Elizabeth Anne “Lizzy” Caplan was born in Los Angeles, California, to Barbara (Bragman), a political aide, and Richard Caplan, a lawyer. She has two older siblings, Julie and Benjamin, and was raised in a Jewish household. Her mother was a cousin of publicist Howard Bragman. Caplan was educated at Alexander Hamilton High School, where she showed an interest in acting and was cast in school plays.
After graduating, Caplan made her onscreen debut in the TV movie From Where I Sit (2000). Other roles followed in TV shows such as Freaks and Geeks (1999), Smallville (2001) and The Pitts (2003). Caplan made her big screen debut with a small role in Orange County (2002) and went on to play Janis Ian in the hit Mean Girls (2004). Further successes include Cloverfield (2008), Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) and 127 Hours (2010).
More recently, Caplan has played Virginia Johnson in the television series Masters of Sex (2013), for which she received an Emmy nomination. She also co-starred in the film The Interview (2014), and will appear with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the still Untitled Christmas Eve Project (2015).
