Turkish Authorities Arrest Eight, Suspend 1,024 Players in Football Betting Scandal

Turkish authorities arrested eight people, including Eyupspor chairperson Murat Ozkaya, on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged betting on football matches, the Guardian reported. Türkiye’s Football Federation (TFF) has also suspended 1,024 players from all leagues pending disciplinary proceedings.

Earlier this month, the TFF suspended 149 referees and assistant referees after an internal probe revealed widespread betting among officials in the country’s professional leagues.

Among the suspended players are 27 from the Super Lig, including athletes from champions Galatasaray and Istanbul rivals Beşiktaş. The federation has referred all cases to the Professional Football Disciplinary Council (PFDK) under Article 57, which prohibits gambling on football matches.

The TFF said it has requested FIFA’s approval for a 15-day national-level transfer window to allow clubs to replace suspended players. Second- and third-tier league matches have been postponed for two weeks, while Super Lig and First League fixtures continue as scheduled.

The TFF board is expected to hold an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday to address the crisis.

TFF President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu called the situation a “moral crisis in Turkish football.” Investigations showed that 371 of 571 active referees held betting accounts, with 152 actively gambling. One referee reportedly placed 18,227 bets, while 42 others made over 1,000 bets each.
