Norway’s royal family faces unprecedented scandal as Marius Borg Hoiby, son of the future queen, is investigated for assault, property damage, death threats, and multiple rape allegations. His admitted substance abuse and “bad boy” image, coupled with Princess Martha Louise’s controversial marriage and the King’s health issues, have plummeted public support for the monarchy.

‘Death threat, assault charges’: Norwegian royal family caught up in series of scandals

When the first rape allegation emerged in November, Hoiby spent a week in police custody — unprecedented for a member of the Norwegian royal family.

Norway’s royal family, long known for its popularity and flawless reputation, has recently been embroiled in a series of rape and assault allegations. The monarchy has been facing an “annus horribilis,” revolving around Marius Borg Hoiby, the 27-year-old son of Norway’s future queen.
Hoiby, the tall, muscular blonde with a “bad boy” image — frequently seen in tuxedos, with slicked-back hair, earrings, and tattoos was arrested in Oslo on August 4, suspected of assaulting his girlfriend the night before. He has spent a week in police custody, unusual for a member of the Norwegian royal family.

After his arrest, a photograph of a knife embedded in the wall of his girlfriend’s apartment quickly surfaced in the media, accompanied by reports that Høiby had handed over a partially destroyed cell phone, missing its SIM card, to the police.

A few days later, in a written statement, Hoiby admitted to the assault and property damage charges, attributing his actions to being under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time.

He said he had struggled “for a long time with substance abuse” and “mental health troubles”.

Hoiby, who reportedly has connections in criminal circles, was raised alongside his two step-siblings but holds no official position within the royal family.

His troubles have deepened since August, with two former girlfriends coming forward to reveal that they too were victims of assault by him.
The range of charges against him had expanded by December even including death threats, violating restraining order, two rapes and another possible sex crime.

Sigrid Hvidsten, a columnist at daily Dagbladet said, “It’s snowballing and it doesn’t seem to be able to stop,”

“It’s the biggest scandal ever in the Norwegian royal family.”

So far, police have not pressed any charges against Hoiby, who has only admitted to the assault and property damage that took place on the night of August 3-4, along with making death threats against an unnamed individual.

Although Norway’s royal family had maintained a scandal-free image for decades, its reputation was recently tarnished by Princess Martha Louise’s second wedding in August.

Royal family losing public support

In 2017, the Norwegian royal family enjoyed the support of 81 per cent of the population, but by September of this year, that figure had fallen to 62 per cent.

The 87-year-old King Harald’s ongoing health issues have further added to the royal family’s series of misfortunes.

The aging monarch has only made brief and indirect comments regarding the family’s ongoing struggles, “Sometimes, life is just very difficult. It’s something that everyone can experience, including our family.”
“When people we love are not doing well, it’s hard for everyone around them. We’re doing our best to look out for one another,” he added.
