The serious allegations against the IDF’s military advocate general are being exploited by Netanyahu’s government to attack the rule of law and erase IDF wrongdoing. Along the way, they’re trying to cover up the failures of October 7 and influence Netanyahu’s criminal trial

The notion that the end of the war with Hamas will mend the divide within Israeli society has proved fundamentally wrong. With the eruption of the military advocate general affair, coming less than two weeks after the start of the cease-fire in Gaza, the judicial overhaul is back – this time on steroids.

The right-wing campaign is deliberately polarizing the debate, from the failures that enabled the October 7 massacre through the failure to vanquish Hamas as promised, to the renewed assault on the judicial system. It’s an unconstrained attack, in which the declarations of Tally Gotliv and her ilk are not the exception, but the rule.

The intent is to sow fear in the hearts of the gatekeepers, protesters and opposition leaders (most of the third group has long been silenced anyway), ahead of the Knesset elections to be held within a year. The noise will be incessant and loud from now on. It’s hard to rule out the possibility that security tensions will intensify, should the political need arise.

There are added bonuses in this strategy. They’ll be able to again blame the jurists for allegedly enabling the massacre (instead of the one person who’s never responsible), to pass the buck on to them for the absence of victory in Gaza and along the way to accrue more accommodations in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks freely about it.

“He’s under trial for some things, and I don’t think they treat him very well,” he said in a “60 Minutes” interview broadcast on Sunday. “We’ll be involved in that to help him out a little bit, because I think it’s very unfair.”

Meanwhile, the poison machine has shifted into fifth gear. On Sunday, the machine launched a full-force attack on the military advocate general, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, amid the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination.

The vocal lynching turned into contrived soul-searching for a few hours, when there was fear she had taken her own life. However, the moment she was found safe, after hours of intense searching, the machine quickly started up again. “We can continue with the lynching,” as one of the machine’s central components announced with a wink.

The campaign isn’t only aimed at the military advocate general. There are bigger fish to fry, starting with Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara. This explains the baseless attempt to place responsibility on the attorney general for the cover-up.

Tomer-Yerushalmi has already confessed to one offense – leaking the video that was part of the investigative material into the severe abuse of a Gazan detainee at the Sde Teiman military detention center. There are more serious suspicions against her, related to the cover-up of the leak as well as false affidavits provided to the High Court of Justice.

She didn’t discuss them in her letter of resignation last Friday. On Sunday, her detention and that of the former Chief Military Prosecutor Col. Matan Solomesh were extended by three days. However, other claims being made against her, to the effect that she engaged in a blood libel against IDF fighters, seem fundamentally baseless.

According to the evidence, the videos are authentic, documenting prolonged, intentional abuse. The prime minister’s attempt to describe the leak as a serious and false attack on Israel’s international standing doesn’t hold water. When it comes to everything regarding Israel’s foreign relations, the problem is the acts themselves – abuse in prisons, war crimes in the Gaza Strip, the mad declarations of cabinet ministers – not leaks by the military prosecutor.

The military advocate general was found on a beach north of Tel Aviv, after her family received a worrisome letter from her and couldn’t locate her. Her cell phone disappeared. Two theories arose, that perhaps dovetail with each other.

One is that she had considered taking her own life but changed her mind. The other is that she threw the phone into the ocean to hide evidence. After she was found, she and Solomesh were arrested. Other officers, some in senior positions, in the military prosecution, are suspected of involvement in the leak, and some in the cover-up or of at least being aware of it.

It’s a very serious scandal. Besides criminal proceedings, it will require a purge at the top of the military prosecutor’s office. The affair certainly won’t contribute to the public standing of law enforcement authorities, which were already targeted for elimination in the ongoing political crisis. You can bet that Baharav-Miara, who had, for the most part, provided cover for Tomer-Yerushalmi, is climbing the walls in fury.

Besides the holy war they are waging against the judiciary, the right-wing politicians are constantly busy trying to legitimize every injustice that Israelis commit in the West Bank, with or without uniforms. The Sde Teiman affair is a new version of the Elor Azaria affair, in which a soldier shot to death a prone, wounded terrorist.

The goal is to delegitimize at all costs any investigation or examination of improper acts against Palestinians. Within this context, they legitimize all the terrible acts cited in the indictment of the soldiers, and plead self-defense while spreading false conspiracies about blood libels.

Netanyahu, as he is wont to do, spreads these claims behind a façade of dignity. The defense minister, Israel Katz, has no need for such camouflage. Katz has outdone himself since the affair came to light last Wednesday. He issued a series of wild accusations against Tomer-Yerushalmi, which ignited the mob atmosphere on social media.

State institutions and Israeli society have suffered even more damage that will probably be felt in the long term. Tomer-Yerushalmi made it possible, but people are milking the affair for all they can, to suit their needs.
