Bill Maher has lashed Americans who refuse to socialize with others who have different beliefs – and branded one woke friend an ‘a**hole’ for refusing a dinner invite on learning a Trump voter would be present.
On Friday’s show, the ‘Real Time’ host said he recently invited the unnamed pal to a dinner party, but the friend refused to come because he did not want to ‘breathe the same air’ as another guest who voted for former President Donald Trump.
‘Okay, there’s a word for people like this. . . assholes,’ he said.
Maher didn’t say whether their friendship survived the snub. The HBO host is a Democrat who has donated millions to his party, but who hates woke preaching, and who regularly indulges in good-natures sparring with conservatives on his show.
Maher went on to say that extreme political tribalism is one of the biggest issues currently facing the US.
‘It’s between the people on both sides who aren’t willing to mingle with Americans outside their political tribe, so they have no idea what they’re like – and the people on both sides who are willing to do that,’ he said.
After blasting his extreme left-wing friend, Maher went on to take aim at conservatives with similar views.
He gave the example of Arizona’s Republican Secretary of State candidate Mark Finchem – a Trump supporter who refuses to associate with anyone who doesn’t back the 45th president.
Maher said not only does Finchem believe Trump won the 2020 election, he ‘can’t find anyone who voted for Joe Biden.’
Last month, while discussing the ongoing divide between Republicans and Democrats in the United States, Maher explained he would never vote for Trump, but ‘understands’ why people would vote for him because there are things that are going on in the country.

He also previously offered grudging praise to Trump, saying the former president’s ability to purge the Republican Party of political enemies in primary season has been ‘impressive.’
‘Eighty-five percent of the people Trump endorsed won: 151 out of 178,’ the commentator said in August referring to GOP candidates Trump endorsed in primaries.
‘Say what you want about Mr. Evil, but boy, what a politician. I mean, that’s impressive — in an evil way, but still, impressive,’ Maher added.
‘There are 10 members of Congress who voted to impeach him and he vowed to knock them off — it’s so Tarantino movie, he’s going to get all 10! He got eight out of 10,’ he noted.
