A Canadian woman in Ontario is facing accusations of “racism” after documenting her concerns about South Asians openly defecating in the sand at her local beach.

Videos from a Wasaga Beach resident in Ontario are being shared widely on social media after she accused immigrants, mainly from India, of defecating in holes on the beach and burying it.

Tiktoker “ItsNattylxnn2.0,” is a local in the Ontario resort town that boasts the world’s longest freshwater beach.

“Natty” went viral online after ranting about being unable to take her kids to the beach because visitors have been using it as a toilet.

She claimed to have discovered feces in spots where she witnessed Indian families digging and even setting up a tent over the hole for the day.

“It’s pre-planned, premeditated. They dig the hole. There are tents,…They pitch the tent; you think they’re going to change, but they’re not. They are using them as washrooms,” she said in one video.

“They did it off my back yard. There were three different families of maybe 25, 30 people that came for barbecues who would set up right on the fence of my back yard. I saw them digging the hole. I saw them placing a tent [over the hole]. When they left, there was poop,” @itsnattylxnn2.0 says in the video. “I have had to yell at people for shitting on the border of my property line. And yes, it was Indian families.”

She has faced accusations of racism for her comments.

Another video in which she complained about the central part of the beach, known as Beach One, attracted over 410,000 views on TikTok.

“I’m tired of people saying that the people pooping on the beach (is) ‘what they do back home.’ We are not back home. We are in Canada, and as a local, I refuse to let my kids dig in the sand on Beach One,” she said in the video.

According to the TikToker, the pooping issue has been ongoing despite people insisting the tents are gone.

“No they’re not. No, they’re fucking not. The beach is full of tents. Full,” she continued.

“I’m not a racist. I’ll never be racist. But what I am is a good person. Because you guys need to know what you are running into when you come to Wasaga Beach. And it’s not locals doing it. It is people from out of town. It is immigrants that think it is okay to dig a hole, pop a squat, and bury their poop where kids play in the sand,” she said.

The user noted a side area of the beach where people can set up camp, acknowledging pooping still happens, yet others continue to put up tents on the main beach where the defecation is happening “more discreetly,” she alleges.

“People with that mentality will not change it,” she added.

She has received mixed comments on her videos, from people pushing back, saying that she is lying—to many others both local and elsewhere in Canada vouching for her, saying they have experienced the same thing.

“I worked on beach one for a summer, and I used to have to tell them to stop, and they just wouldn’t,” one user said in the comments.

One Indian commenter claimed that he anticipated that @itsnattylxnn2.0 was going to falsify or “edit” videos to “fit her narrative.” But the issue of South Asians using beaches to defecate is not new and has a well-documented history.

She responded to one TikTok user who called her a racist colonizer by saying she has a First Nations background.

“People are too scared to speak up because they think that it’s being racist. It’s not because if another white person was doing that, would you feel any type of way to tell them to ‘pull your pants up.’ ‘Don’t be doing that on a beach?’” she said. “This has nothing to do with targeting someone based on their skin colour and everything to do with protecting our beaches, our parks. These are places that everyone is supposed to be able to go to and enjoy.”

In 2020, the Globe and Mail reported that tensions were beginning to rise in Ontario beach communities as locals expressed outrage at the massive uptick in public defecation happening on their shores. One community, St. Catharines, went so far as to vote to refuse beach access to anyone not from the immediate Niagara region.

While the Globe and Mail does not name the ethnicity of those suspected of public defecation, a cursory glance at message boards and subreddits dedicated to those communities all name South Asian immigrants as the perpetrators.

Open defecation is a known issue in India, and was so widespread that the United Nations launched a “poo in loo” campaign in 2013. The campaign featured an animated poop and catchy music encouraging Indians to “take their poo to the loo.”

As a result of the negative attention open defecation was causing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought to build hundreds of millions of toilets in the country in an effort to quash open defecation once and for all. But while Modi declared India “open defecation free” in 2019, the practice is still widespread, with beaches being a particular hotspot.

Needless to say, peeing openly is also a Kins of Kamala’s thing…
