Ireland becomes first country to legalize same-sex marriage by popular historic vote
“We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate,” Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s health minister who came out as gay in Jan. 2015, said on May 23. “That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world of liberty and equality. It’s a very proud day to be Irish.”
The people of Ireland have spoken! In a historic referendum, Ireland has overwhelmingly voted ‘yes’ to legalizing gay marriage. The country passed the referendum with 62.1% of the population voting in favor of same-sex marriage.

It’s a good day for Ireland! With all 43 constituencies having declared, the country has voted in favor of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Ireland’s first national vote on the issue. With 1,201,607 votes cast in support of gay marriage compared to 734,300 “no” votes, Ireland will now amend its constitution to make gay marriage legal. Congrats, Ireland!

Although Ireland is a prominently Catholic country, its citizens wanted a change. From the beginning, the vote was clearly siding in favor of same-sex marriage, according to the Associated Press. The counting of the votes started May 23. For the majority of polling, the “yes” vote was over 60% in Ireland. The total voter turnout was 60.5%, according to The Guardian.
Gay couples and supporters of the legalization watched outside Dublin Castle as the votes were tallied. The crowd would cheer as a constituency would go green and boo as a constituency would go red.
