Chingari, a short-video making app, has responded to a report that accused them of developing an adult entertainment app through their paid 1-on-1 video call feature.

The report examined Chingari’s shift towards “18+ content with paid live 1-on-1 calls between creators and users.” It also mentioned recruitment posts targeting creators with promises of substantial earnings. Additionally, the report highlighted various social media advertisements and videos that made suggestive promises to users.

In a statement, Chingari clarified that their Private Call feature simply allows users to interact with each other using video mode. Viewers can participate by commenting, asking questions, and sending virtual gifts during the live stream. This feature provides an opportunity for creators to monetize their content. The platform firmly denied the claim that Chingari had solely pivoted to the paid live 1-on-1 call feature.

“It’s interactive, enabling viewers to comment, ask questions, and send virtual gifts during the stream. It enabled creators to monetize their time. The claim of “Chingari’s pivot paid live 1-on-1 calls between creators and users’ is baseless,” the company said.

Chingari emphasized that the Private Call feature is just one aspect of their app. They argued that this feature was introduced because no other established platform enables users to directly communicate with their favorite creators. Furthermore, the company assured users that they employ a strong artificial intelligence-based model and a team of moderators to identify and monitor any Not Safe for Work (NSFW) content.

“Chingari private call is just one of the features of this app. So to infer, Chingari in no way has pivoted to only this feature. Moreover, this feature was introduced because no other legacy platform allows users to directly talk to their favourite creators,” he argued.

According to the Inc42 report, when questioned about their new feature and monetization model, Chingari altered the parental rating of their Android app on the Google Play Store to 18+. However, it is worth noting that the personal video call feature was actually introduced back in April, not as recently as the change in the parental rating suggests.
