A fertility scandal has erupted in the Netherlands after a new donor registration system revealed that at least 85 sperm donors fathered far more children than legally allowed.

Some clinics have reportedly broken the rules knowingly for decades.

According to The Guardian, the Dutch Society for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NVOG) confirmed that 85 sperm donors had fathered 25 or more children, violating the national limit designed to prevent inbreeding in a small, densely populated country.

Gynaecologist Marieke Schoonenberg told Nieuwsuur, “The number of so-called ‘mass donors’ should be zero. On behalf of the whole profession, we wish to apologise. We didn’t do things as they should have been done.”

The findings emerged after the introduction of a national donor registry on April 1, 2025, which retroactively covers cases dating back to 2004, when donor anonymity was banned (Dutch News). This new system links donors and recipients, enforcing a reduced cap of 12 children per donor, down from the previous 25.

Dutch fertility clinics deliberately broke the law

The NVOG admitted, as reported by Dutch News, that fertility clinics allowed donors to register at multiple clinics simultaneously, and even reused sperm more than 25 times without informing donors or mothers. Clinics also exchanged sperm without proper paperwork, which the NVOG acknowledged breached ethical and legal standards.

An internal investigation at the Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC) revealed a “shambles” in their sperm donor records. According to Dutch News, the hospital admitted that donor data went missing, and in some cases, one donor fathered over 25 children in the same area, increasing the risk of incest.

Both sources confirmed that at least 10 fertility doctors illegally used their own sperm. Among them was Jan Karbaat, who, according to The Guardian, fathered at least 81 children.

Also implicated is Jonathan Jacob Meijer, the Dutch man featured in Netflix’s The Man with 1,000 Kids.

Ties van der Meer, founder of the foundation Stichting Donorkind, said in Dutch News: “There are at least 3,000 children involved, each with more than 25 half-siblings.”

In The Guardian, he called the scandal a “medical calamity” and said it had severely damaged “people’s trust in the medical system, and in the governments that allowed all this to happen.”

Van der Meer also warned of the emotional toll on families: “The children will never be able to date without having to do a DNA test to see if they are related.”

According to reports, the Dutch health ministry has said it will brief MPs this week on the findings. The NVOG has urged donors, mothers, and donor children to contact their fertility clinics for more information.
