White House says Signal case is “closed,” as investigation calls grow

The Trump administration has taken action to ensure a Signal group chat that inadvertently included The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg can never happen again, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Monday.

Why it matters: There have been growing calls from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for an investigation into the Signal scandal, with Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee the latest to call for an independent probe in a letter to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Monday.

The White House has closed the case of the scandal over a secret Signal chat, where The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, was mistakenly added, said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, CNN reports.

“As the president has made it very clear, Mike Waltz continues to be an important part of his national security team, and this case has been closed here at the White House. As far as we are concerned, there have been steps made to ensure that something like that can obviously never happen again, and we’re moving forward,” Leavitt said.

She expressed no doubts about Waltz’s future in the Trump administration.

“The president and Mike Waltz and his entire national security team have been working together very well, if you look at how much safer the United States of America is because of the leadership of this team,” she noted.

The Signal scandal

US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz recently accidentally added The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg to a chat of top officials. They discussed US plans to strike at the Houthis in Yemen.

In particular, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth disclosed details of the operation in the chat half an hour before the start of the US operation, including the time of the fighter jets’ departure and more.
